We got a standing ovation on the way out (due to the agro with the police imo). Was quite scary around the place on the way to the car though with nutters running around with flares etc.. Cajun Posted April 28, 2008 Share Posted April 28, 2008 Millwall is far more dangerous now they have the fencing for the away fans, basically putting them in a smaller area all grouped together so the Millwall supporters have an easier job throwing things at you from the station platform. Don't get me wrong, it's a shithole, I think the meaningless game and the lush day made it a bit better, we were a bit worried about wearing our colours (did it anyway) but we went in the first pub off the tube and apart from 30 seconds where it suddenly looked like it was going to kick off outside for some reason, we mingled with the West Ham fans and it was fine. I'm sure it was a Wednesday, I lived in the midlands at the time and got the train from Birmingham. We were behind the goal and it really was bad. They had allotments behind the ground and had a platform up a tree, they stood up the tree for the full game and threw bricks. The exact same thing happened the only other time I went but that time wasn't too bad as I stood against the back wall, I thought it would be safe the second time as I really thought the police would have worked out a way of stopping them. I got into Cardiff during the day and was on the drink in the city centre then walked up to the ground and went in the Ninian Park pub which was a big mistake although nothing actually happened other than threats. We tried to go that way after the game to get back to the train station and I was stabbed with the metal point of an umbrella then it kicked off for a few minutes until the police came along and took us the other way. We did OK considering I was only with one other person and we got jumped by 5 or 6, I couldn't miss them when I lashed out at them yet they quite often hit each other because they couldn't get at us. The first time we beat them 4-0 and were escorted to the train station, it started with something like 30 of us being escorted but I would guess 70 were Cardiff fans by the time we got near to the station, they kicked off just as we got to the train station, the police didn't seem to do much but to be fair, I had other things on my mind so didn't see much of what they did. To let so many people get amongst us on the way down without asking where they were from was pathetic. we got the coppers to let us into the NUFC standing area for the last 30mins. figured we'd stand more of a chance in a larger group of us.ended up taking ordres to buy tickets for the oxford game a week later from some southern based mags and sending them down to them. we had been in the ninian pub that night (brains bitter) but left when we got far too out numbered and it started looking dodgy. Not sure about that, but our coach broke down in Shoreditch before the game, me & Scoreboard82 had to taxi it to the ground along with 3 of the maddest fkrs in the world off our bus, the taxi driver tried to overcharge us & nearly got his taxi trashed until he said the meter was wrong. Very intimidating. Goodison can be pretty tasty when the occasion calls for it like. Virtually all grounds now are dead for 95% of games though. One of the most famous atmospheres was against Don Revie's Leeds. Goodison Park has never been exactly placid; Jack Charlton rated the Everton crowd as "the worst before which I have ever played … there always seems to be a threatening attitude, a vicious undertone to their remarks." In only the fourth minute Giles and Sandy Brown, the Everton left-back, had jumped into a tackle just outside the Everton penalty area. Brown, incensed by the vigour of Giles' challenge and subsequently complaining of 'stud marks in the chest', got up and threw a left hander at Giles and was predictably sent off. From then on the frenzied atmosphere saw both sets of players flying into tackles with the crowd baying for retribution." Things came to a head after 36 minutes. Bell and Everton right winger Derek Temple were following the flight of the ball and seemingly unaware of each other. They collided at full speed, laying each other out. That was the signal for the crowd to get completely out of hand. While Bell and Temple were receiving attention, missiles rained down on the players and the trainers attending them. Les Cocker and referee Ken Stokes were struck by flying coins. Desperate to quell a potential riot, Stokes promptly decided on drastic action - he ordered both sets of players to the dressing rooms to give them and the crazed crowd time to cool off. After the game an angry, booing crowd had to be dispersed by mounted police from the streets surrounding the stadium. From the safety of their coach, which had to withstand another barrage of missiles, the Leeds players must have reflected on the ill feeling that had almost overwhelmed them.
