Steve Harper - 15 Years...

Recommended Posts

They're also liable to all kinds of political and public relations skullduggery e.g. Niall Quinn's "testimonial" granted despite only being at Sunderland a few seasons (not the stipulated 10 years), when of course the blarney kissing phoney earned widespread acclaim and indeed santification on Wearside for donating the proceeds of the testimonial he wasn't actually entitled to, to local charities. After "expenses" of course.

This is what Niall had to say about his gig:

HP: Well, giving away a million quid is an extraordinary thing to do.

NQ: I don’t think it was, because I think if I’d had the game for myself I’d have got about 15,000 people, I’d have had to pay 40% tax and wouldn’t have earned a lot of money out of it. That would have been selfish too, because I wasn’t 10 years at the club which is what you have to be to earn a testimonial. I felt the reasonable thing to do was try and get the same type of money and give it to a good cause. Then when people started bandying the figure of a million quid around, I thought: ‘Here we go, this is going to die on its arse. I’m going to get about 100 grand here’.

Harper would have got loyalty bonuses at other clubs aswell as better wages as a first choice and a signing on fee.

He would of missed out re-signing bonus at Newcastle United & picked up a signing on fee more than likely at club with out the resource of NUFC. How does he automatically get better wages as first choice keeper. As NUFC are/have been some of the best payers in Premiership I doubt Harper could of earned more elsewhere.

I think he would have if he ended up as first choice. We will never be able to prove it but I bet he wasnt exactly tough to negotiate with so I doubt he is on massive wages.

Bashing Steve Harper seems to be a fashionable thing, and many just go along with it as they haven't the brain cells to make their own opinion. I wouldn't say hero or legend, but the lad has done well in the past 18 months. He talks to his defence more than Shay, currently has more bottle than Shay, he has made some canny stops. He has saved us a bucket of cash by hanging round (with no ambition) for 15 years. Get off the lad's back and form your own opinions ffs.

Agree with your opinion or be criticised you mean ???

Would that not mean people agreeing with you haven't formed their own opinion either ???

I'm confused ???

Not at all, but these people who slate him either harp on about no ambition, ignoring the loyalty he has given to the club or whine on about the howler at Liverpool. So in 15 years that is all they base their opinion on? Crap!

Oh aye, whatever.  :pow: I am sure they attend every match too to base that on rather than watching motd and proclaiming that they are the toon's biggest fan.  >:D

Aye Jon.............he is more than likely on minimum wage. Do you not think that is why he will have a agent & his agent would/will of mentioned some things you have if Harper moved elsewhere. Jame Mclen was whacking 5K a week in ffs .

I bet he isn't on a massive whack, again we will never know but when signing these contracts he will have known he was more than likely going to be second choice and was hardly in a position to negotiate very hard. He will still have been played a hell of a lot more than your average Joe obviously.

So I'm only allowed to have an opinion on a player if I've seen every second he's played?  ???

What if I have seen every game and still disagree?  ???

Then you haven't got the brain cells to make your own opinion of course.

Every manager has praised him & said he is the best number 2 in the country, he knows other clubs would sign him & his agent know all this, his agent is in great position to negotiate him a good deal. So I reckon he is on a good whack, not Owen style but I reckon he wouldn't be far off joining Mr Ashleys despised 50K-a-week club.

If we are going round in circles here let me

As much as I do rate Harper i'm slightly iffy with his whole "Hes a top bloke" status. On numerous occassions when working as a Steward hes promised fans to sign autographs and what have you then jogged off when finished. I fail to believe he has that poor a memory.

Im sorry to say but from my experiances of going after matches/training ground, hes the most 'loyal' player and only player who likes to spend time speaking to the fans. He also always gave gloves, shorts etc... away and before some matches he throws his jumper into the fans. Has a heart for the geordies.

Great keeper, maybe not good enough for starting every week but im not sad to see his name on the starting 11. We will need an improvement in a year or two (hopefully tim krul)

That's fine with me. We'll agree that we're going to disagree.

I'm sure that's something we can both agree on. :)
