blaydon races v the bubbles of west ham

Recommended Posts

Guest geordie01

Watching West Ham tonight and heard them sing that song (you know the one im talking about)

the bubbles are to west ham wat the races are to newcastle and what struck me was how often i hear their fans singing that, with such vigour, i may add and how little we sing the blaydon races when it is widely known as our unofficial anthem.

i must admit to being an armchair fan (so feel free to shoot me down) as i live in belfast but i get over 2-3 times a season and i have never heard it being sung nor have i heard it on any of our televised games

whats your opinions on it? i feel it shuld be sung at the start of every game just like you'll never walk alone at anfield and celtic park etc.

Blaydon Races is world famous and older than football itself, its a Geordie anthem not so much a football only anthem. We do sing it and at times it gets sung with real gusto but not as much as it should, half don't even know the proper words.

Its a brilliant anthem though, I love it and always have done well before footy, we used to sing it at assembly in primary school but all that has went out the window these days.

according to wikipedia geordie ridley first sang the song in 1862 while forever blowing bubbles dates from 1918. some other clubs have copied the blaydon races, sunderland the cretins had that "going along the roker road" shite.

The Blaydon Races

I went to Blaydon Races

'Twas on the 9th of June

Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Two

On a Summer's Afternoon

We took the bus from Balmbras

And she was heavy laden

Away we went along Collingwood Street

That's on the Road to Blaydon

Chorus:

Oh me lads, you should've seen us gannin'

Passing the folks along the road

just as they were stannin'

Aal the lads and lasses there

aal wi' smilin' faces

Gannin along the Scotswood Road

To see the Blaydon Races

We flew past Armstrong's factory

And up by the Robin Adair

gannin ower the Railway Bridge

The bus wheel flew off there

The lasses lost their crinolenes

And the veils that hide their faces

I got two black eyes and a broken nose

gannin t' Blaydon Races

Oh me lads...

Now when we got the wheel back on

Away we went again

But them that had their noses broke

They went back ower hyem

Some went to the dispensary

And some to Doctor Gibbses

And some to the infirmary

To mend their broken ribses

Oh me lads...

We flew across the Chain Bridge

And into Blaydon Toon

The bellman he was calling then

They called him Jackie Broon

I saw him talking to some chaps

And them he was persuadin'

To gan and see Geordie Ridley's show

At the Mechanics' Hall in Blaydon

Oh me lads...

Now when we got to Paradise

There were bonny games begun

There were four and twenty on the bus

And how we danced and sung

They called on me to sing a song

and I sung 'em 'Paddy Fagan'

I danced a jig and I swung me twig

The day wi' went to Blaydon

Oh me lads...

The rain it poured down all the day

And made the ground quite muddy

Coffee Johnny had a white hat on

Shouted 'Whi stole the cuddy?'

There were spice stalls and monkey shows

And owld wives selling ciders

And a chap on a ha'penny roundaboot

Saying 'noo me lads for riders?'

Oh me lads... (to fade)

Words: The immortal Geordie Ridley

the first time that happened at st. james' park, there was nearly a riot, people jumping over the wall to get at the blackburn fans, no-one was watching the match the whole crowd was booing and whistling

Too fucking right. Thay may as well hold their hands up and say, 'Aye, you've got us there. We've got no tradition or originality of our own. Sorry, lads. We're like Boyzone doing shit cover versions of decent songs. We'll get our coats...'

Surely some mentalist has come up with a song about Blackburn they can use.

blaydon races is about some happy bloke and singing and celebrating about the fact that he gets to have a day out seeing the races, the carrage wrecks, people are hurt (seriously in some cases) and the main character gets a broken nose and two black eyes. Despite the blood streaming down his face and fate obviously laughing at him he refuses to let it get him down and still is happy about the fact that he is on his way to the races... to no doubt lose all of his money... its an allegory about Newcastle fans and their relationshp with the Board over the past century.

Its "starin'" by the way and not "stannin'"  :winking:
