Was a right back a bigger priority than a left back?

Keegan wanted another left back (Warnock?) but our first choice Enrique is under pressure for his place from Bassong and we also have Zog who can fill in (badly usually).

If Beye's injured there doesn't seem to be any back up at all. Was it right to make such a fuss about left back all things considered?

I think Keegan saw Bassong as a centre back first and foremost, with N'Zogbia the only back up for Enrique.

Whereas at right back I think Keegan saw his options there as Beye, Taylor and possibly Geremi.

I think both backup positions for fullback were a worry, tbh.  I don't know if either was that much more than the other.

Though am I totally incorrect in thinking Taylor played at RB regularly for the U21's?  Or was he just often the right side of a back 3?  I could never tell what their formation really was when I got the odd chance to watch them.  There's Geremi too, I guess

We needed both but as fans most people didn't care if we filled those positions in the Summer, hardly exciting is it getting in a pair of fullbacks when most are happy with Beye and Enrique as first choice.

It was the fullback area's where we were genuinely short on numbers.

Central midfield was/is still my biggest concern. The fact that Nicky Butt is still starting says quite a lot.

There's quite a few positions we need to fill, the problem is no club is realistically going to go out and fill 12 or so positions in one Summer apart from Chelsea when Abramovich took over, next Summer Butt, Owen, Viduka, Harper, Cacapa and Edgar are out of contract and will need replacing as well as the positions we already need too fill.

Obviously specialist full-backs would have been nice, but I have no problem whatsover with Taylor as back-up right-back, and Bassong back-up left-back. Think we'd have done much better the last few weeks had we started those two there, rather than N'Zogbia and f*cking Edgar.

"We've got no cover for right or left-back at the moment and that's probably the two most important areas."

:)

And he had Zayette on trial, and for whatever reason didn't sign him.

We also needed a creative midfielder and a back up striker for Viduka, which we got on transfer deadline day which KK wasn't too happy with by all accounts. Time will tell on those dealings I suppose.

Very true.  There's a lot of hindsight going on now with regards to transfer dealings and cover for various positions.  Check the Warnock thread and you'll see that a large number didn't want him and many didn't want a LB at all saying that we should stick with Enrique and if we signed another player it should only be as understudy to him.  It's arguable whether that's what Bassong is, but he currently looks a better option at LB than Enrique anyway.

I'd have been happy with Bernard Mendy on a free.

We still need 2 fullbacks a right winger centre midfielder and a striker. On top of reserves and academy players, we are far from the finished article.

So much didn't happen this summer, but it was on the cards from the off.

Shame, such a chance to revitalise the club and its fortunes, another year wasted.

Could fairly succesfully sum up our summer as well.

From Taylor's performance on Sunday, whilst he isn't defensively sound, he wasn't defensively sound at centre back so at least at full back he offers something on the offensive side of things, which he seems fairly good at. Give him a try is what I say.
