Michael Owen gets injured; rejoice!

Recommended Posts

For his World Cup ambitions, he'd honestly have more chance of going by scoring 20+ goals in the Championship for us than he would getting 8 goals for Hull.

Harder to score 8 goals for Hull than 20+ for us in the Championship in theory.  I'd suggest that performing in Premiership standard of football is much more likely to get him a WC spot.  Besides, we know he's not staying so he needs a new club.

Owen got 8 goals where he wasn't scoring for half a season.

To get over 20 a season in the Championship he'll have to be performing at a pretty decent level consistently.

It's all opinion as to what clarifies as performing in comparing two leagues.

But if anything, the premiership is at a far higher standard to the championship - thus harder to score/maintain a starting 11 place.  Owen isn't stupid - he'll want to get an EPL club and perform in one of the top leagues in European football.

But yes, if he stayed (which he isn't) and scored 20 goals in a full season he would have shown consistency.

However, the main point to make in this situations is that he isn't staying - hence the prospect of Owen of scoring 20+ goals for us next season is a mute point.

In terms of league performance Scotland - as he scored more goals in the league he was playing in.

It's not just about that though - that's what you've got to understand.  It's the quality of football that is being played, the ability of the player, his consistency, current physical condition...

Scotland (in the highest probability) would not perform to the same level as Michael Owen in the EPL or international football - that has to be assumed.  So I see little substance in your point of comparing players from different leagues - where one has had a full season and the other an injury ravaged season.

No idea where this argument is going tbh - completely pointless.

Owen is moving clubs - it's just about who he signs for now. Your point about him being better off with us doesn't count as he isn't going to be with us next season.

Reckons he was days away from signing an extension in september that would have kept him here for the rest of his career. KK walked and all talks were shelved

Sunday Sun

This is the first and only time this will be meant with the utmost sincerity...

Thank you Mike Ashley and Dennis Wise!

"We're interested in Michael Owen on the right terms. He's a fantastic footballer. He's had a few injury problems but we would have to be interested in him," boomed Hull chairman Paul Duffen.

"If the right deal can be done then we would definitely be keen to sign him. We are an ambitious football club and we want to show that.

"It would be an enormous move for us but the deal can be done if it is on the right terms."

Hull would not be a step up from us that's for sure - regardless of our current league status.

Doubt Owen will go there.

Owen will go to whoever pays the most. Unless a top club comes in for him, which won't happen.

Although he's still hoping Liverpool go in for him, if they miss out on their targets.

Genuinely not convinced by the 'whoever pays the most' arguement.  He's looking for a team that can offer him first choice football, with a platform to prove his ability, consistency and physical conditions.  Also, due to his injury problems he's not going to be have the strongest negotiations - which as in the Hull article, a pay as you play contract seems likely.

Going to be interesting to see who he signs for in the end - especially now a team have come out with public interest.

I find it fucking hilarious that half the england strikers could get injured and he still wouldn't be in the squad

Rather a sad attitude.

It's the same circumstances which meant he missed so many games for us you know. http://www.otf2.com/forums/images/smilies/sorry.gif

Say the Portsmouth takeover goes through and they offer him 80k a week, or Villa come in for him with 40 or 50k and promise him first choice alongside Heskey, he would choose Portsmouth for the extra money. All being equal, he'd go to villa, so the money will probably make the difference, over where he ends up.

yeah thinking about it, atm Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney, Carlton Cole, Darren Bent, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Gabby Agbonlahor all > Owen for the england team. Capello clearly knows his stuff... or not, when you think that England have a fairly creative midfield, and Owen would be far better than cloggers like Cole and Bent

Apparently Capello was there to watch him at Villa Park and if he'd scored, or put a performance in, he'd have got the call up for the Kazakstan and Andorra games because of the real striking shortage but he offered absoloutely nothing.

An on form Owen would get in ahead of Carlton Cole and Darren Bent and he still has his sights set on a World Cup place. Whoever signs Owen should bear in mind, that that's all he'll care about next season. Getting back in the Endland squad but at the same time, he'll have to have a good season for whatever club he goes to, to make the squad.

'relatively injury free' - oh so he's still had a few injuries then.

Then there is the size of his initial injury/sheer volume of injuries in the past and the impact all this has had on his body.

So yeah, injuries.
