I'd suggest that performing in Premiership standard of football is much more likely to get him a WC spot. Besides, we know he's not staying so he needs a new club. But if anything, the premiership is at a far higher standard to the championship - thus harder to score/maintain a starting 11 place. However, the main point to make in this situations is that he isn't staying - hence the prospect of Owen of scoring 20+ goals for us next season is a mute point. It's not just about that though - that's what you've got to understand. It's the quality of football that is being played, the ability of the player, his consistency, current physical condition... Scotland (in the highest probability) would not perform to the same level as Michael Owen in the EPL or international football - that has to be assumed. So I see little substance in your point of comparing players from different leagues - where one has had a full season and the other an injury ravaged season. Hull would not be a step up from us that's for sure - regardless of our current league status. Doubt Owen will go there. Owen will go to whoever pays the most. Unless a top club comes in for him, which won't happen. Although he's still hoping Liverpool go in for him, if they miss out on their targets. He's looking for a team that can offer him first choice football, with a platform to prove his ability, consistency and physical conditions. Also, due to his injury problems he's not going to be have the strongest negotiations - which as in the Hull article, a pay as you play contract seems likely. Say the Portsmouth takeover goes through and they offer him 80k a week, or Villa come in for him with 40 or 50k and promise him first choice alongside Heskey, he would choose Portsmouth for the extra money. An on form Owen would get in ahead of Carlton Cole and Darren Bent and he still has his sights set on a World Cup place. Whoever signs Owen should bear in mind, that that's all he'll care about next season.
