Hughton To Make Transfers

Roeder's squad in 2006-2007 was the worst Newcastle have had in the Premiership era, yet we survived. Martins and Duff were decent signings as well. (comparatively at least. Martins was our best player for significant stretches and Duff, despite his faults, was usually available and usually contributed.) Full respect to Roeder.

I thank Given, Martins and Dyer for keeping us up that year.

Roeder's biggest signing?

It is nonsensical to think that squad was Roeder's fault. He was here for two windows and spent a net of about 6 million pounds. The majority of his transfers were free signings/ random risks. The mass injuries to the sqad didn't help, and his owner did not put him in position to succeed.

He pissed around like a knob in that transfer window and ended up signing absolute toss. Rossi, Sibierski and - not forgetting - Olivier Bernard ffs, after the window had closed. We didn't need Duff either.

Then he didn't even play Rossi when he was blatantly a better bet than everyone else.

Graeme Souness had one hell of a squad left to him by SBR and he tore it apart piece by piece until we were absolute dogshit.

For that reason alone, Roeder was better than Souness.

Souness just made Bobby's shit players show their true colours; Hughes, O'Brien, etc. Some of the good ones turned shit n'all. On top of bringing in a load of wank.

How excited when we signed Parker/Emre/Luque/Owen?

First off the only money we had that window had to go to a striker as Ameobi was our only fit one. Secondly as fas as the signings go:

Martins was pretty good.

Duff for 5 mill isnt bad either.

Rossi you say is a bad signing and then say he was "blatantly a better bet than everyone else."

Sibierski did very well for a free signing.

And bernard is the odd one out who was a free signing on a low 1 yr deal.

For only having 15 mill and needing to buy a new top striker with it I think he did pretty well.

One could say he had considerably less than that considering the departures. It would be like saying Ashley gave the team 15 million this year.

Honestly dunno how anyone can defend that transfer window. It was fucking pitiful.

Martins was good. The rest were shite and nowhere enough to sustain the promising endeavours we made the season before. The main problem was that he didn't address the defense. When you consider he didn't sign one defender when Carr, Babayaro and Bramble were playing every week just shows his incompetence. He fucked up badly.

Duff was the icing on the cake. We didn't need him and he's been shite ever since.

With respect, this is the problem with looking at only the stats, it's easy to make a misleading case for Roeder because of some good results. Roeder was a supposedly nice guy who tried to come across as authoritative and because he couldn't carry it off he just ended up losing respect in the dressing room. It's probably the same story at every club he's managed.

Replace Duff with Owen and you've pretty much just described a Spuness transfer window. What makes him better than Roeder? I'd rather have 7th place than 13/14th.
