If it was an injection to get him through a Cup Final it would be fair enough, but its absolute madness to risk his recovery for one extra league game. Fair play to him for wanting to do it though.

As I've said before, Shola will be no better after the op. Has he been carrying this injury and that is why he has been crap for 200 games?, I son't think so. After playing his hip is sore, he probably has pain killers or something

It looks like Shola may take some part tomorrow...

Sight for sore eyes

Nov 10 2006

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Kieron Dyer battles with Andy O'Brien

Kieron Dyer will make a welcome return to the Newcastle United picture for tomorrow's crucial Premiership clash with Manchester City.

And if Shola Ameobi shows no ill-effects from today's training session the gangling striker could yet be heading for the City of Manchester Stadium for one last blast before his hip operation.

But there was no clue from Glenn Roeder today as to just who will be in goal with Shay Given fast approaching full fitness after his horrific injury.

However, while Titus Bramble and Oba Martins still face fitness tests because of their hamstring problems, it looks as though Roeder will again have the services of Dyer, Craig Moore, Nicky Butt and possibly Ameobi, who all missed out on the trip to Watford on Tuesday night.

United insist that Dyer is fully fit again after all his hamstring problems and that he has been given the all-clear by his specialist after his freak eye accident a fortnight ago.

But Roeder said today he was taking a close look at Given and Harper before deciding just who will keep goal tomorrow.

Given did not travel with the rest of the squad to Watford for this week's Carling Cup tie, staying behind to train with the club's youngsters.

And Harper has been performing wonders in the United goal despite not being 100% fit because of a groin injury.

Given is among the top keepers in Europe, but it would be hard for Roeder to leave Harper out and I would be surprised if Tuesday's penalty shoot-out hero did not play tomorrow.

Given's situation is complicated by his selection for the Republic of Ireland squad for Wednesday's European Championship qualifier with San Marino in Dublin.

Irish boss Steve Staunton has always been very understanding with United, but surely it cannot be right that when Given returns to competitive action for the first time since that clumsy challenge from Marlon Harewood at West Ham on September 17 it should be for club not country.

Roeder is already furious that in United's only free midweek between now and the turn of the year he could have no fewer than 10 players away on international duty next week.

And all of them, apart from the Irish trio of Given, Damien Duff and Stephen Carr who are on European Championship duty, are likely to be picked to play for their country in friendly matches.

These include Emre, who will return to the international scene with Turkey in Wednesday's friendly with Italy in Bergamo.

Said Roeder today: "Emre tells me his competitive international ban is over and he is keen to get back into the swing of things and he will go to Italy with our blessing."

However, the prospect of seeing Scott Parker called up for England and James Milner and Steven Taylor on under-21 duty has not exactly pleased Roeder.

Taylor was sent off in his last England under-21 appearance and it remains to be seen whether he will be in Peter Taylor's squad for the friendly with Holland.

Roeder fumed: "I cannot see the point of these meaningless friendlies at this stage of the season."

Matty Pattison has been pulled out of the South African squad to play Egypt at Brentford because of injury.

However, Craig Moore and Seppe Rossi are included in the Australian and Italian under-21 squads respectively.

Meanwhile, Roeder claims that before Duff heads back to Dublin he is "gagging" for a goal against Manchester City tomorrow.

He said: "A goal tomorrow would give Damian such a lift but he is a top man to work with and things will come good for him."

"Michael Owen is heading off for his operation soon, but before he went, a few of the lads thought it would be funny to smash his knee to pieces with a sledgehammer. I thought it would be good for morale and it's getting fixed anyway so I allowed it. A good time was had by all."

What a fucking joke of a set-up we've got here.

Ridiculous man.  "If we're sending him for an op we may as well get our money's worth.  Let's give this surgeon something to think about."

By the way, NSG, disregarding the fact that your dad's a neurosurgeon for a second, if he hasn't examined Shola or seen his x-rays, I'm somewhat inclined to IGNORE OUT OF HAND anything that he has to say on the matter.  bluebigrazz.gif

A neurosurgeon covers the head/brain.

In Shola's case his recovery time from the op is surley down to physiotherapy?

The exact nature of his injury must be know before we can know  wether  him playing games can prolong the recovery time.

cant fault his dedication? he knows he isnt anywhere near being fit so why is he so desperate to play? he would show more dedication if he just accepted he isnt fit and just pisses off for a year.

If he has seen our threat in front of goal recently he might think its worth it!

One of the reasons Shola's playing tomorra is he's bloody scared incase he drops in the pecking order.

He's a crap player but when you've got a boss who loves you to bits-Roeders admitted it- he'll try an play him whatever and whenever.

Hasn't anyone noticed that IF Shola was that good why hasn't any club come in for him at all??? all these shola fans think on that eh? no one wants him at all cos he's total crap! He'll never be a bloody footballer never mind striker as long as he's a hole in his arse!

As one poster has remarked-it shows you how much we've gone down when Ameobe's classed as our top striker!!  how true.

Shola's an insult to our strip and to keep playing him is ludicrous-get rid of him and take Roeder & FS too.

If it wasn't for the stupidity of the managers of this club we would have had a top striker now in Chopra, who was never given any chance what so ever-just because Shola's face fitted more.

sorry if some ameobe fans think this is awful .........no I'm not.

You say Shola is scared he will fall down the pecking order then claim Roeder loves him to bits..... right!

How do you know no-one has come in for him? Apparently Spurs did a couple of years back with an offer of £4m, now it looks a very good offer to me but it sort of bins your argument.

Complete knee-jerk on Chopra who never really looked like he could make the step up and has scored a similar amount of goals this season as Robert Earnshaw, Andy Gray, Jamie Cureton and Rasiak (let me guess the typical "All better than Shola" responce that you were so desperate for).

Hadn't realised until yesterday that we were actualy live on Sky! So was glad that I would be able to have a nice lunch in front of the tv, kick back with a few beers...

But now I'm gutted that I'm going to have to fucking watch Shola, It's going to do my head in, I already know it.

In the history of NUFC, no player has ever been given so mamy chances as Shola. He has performed crap week in week out and is still given preference over more deserving causes.  How many full   games in the first team was Chopra given to prove himself, same goes for Luque. Under present European law there must be some sort of grounds for discrimination. If Luque is sold on, or given away, without being given a run of games to prove himself, I for one will be gutted and ashamed at the treatment he has received by Roeder. You have to admire Luque for taking it the way he has, a lot of players would have been slagging the manager off by now.
