That's our best team in my opinion - 4-5-1 in defense and 4-3-3 in attack.

It gives us plenty of natural width, attacking flow and strength in defense with Smith being the anchor. Ameobi has proven himself (thus far) as a very good championship player, but if that fails we have other strikers more than capable of doing that job too!

Everyone is missing the point here.

You cannot play your best team or formation, week in, week out. You need to change personnel and tactics to counter the different opposition styles.

True. Or you can dominate the league and make people try to adapt to playing against you.

I think this is more likely the case! If we are good enough, which we have proven so far... then teams will be looking to trying and counter our working formation and tactics. Why would we alter our style and tactics if our players are better than the opponents? If it was that simple to alter your tactics and formations against the better teams in order to beat them, then the hulls and birminghams would be really laying into the uniteds or chelseas week in week out!

With that, having Jonas and Loven coming in would allow Ranger or Carroll to play there and hold the play up. Sorted.

I see your point, considering after the last performance Ranger put in. Also imo Ranger is better at holding the ball up than certainly Ameobi. However, what you need consider is experience and other parts of their game. For me Ameobi gets the nod ahead of Ranger because he has started great off the blocks in the championship and although there is all possibility that Ranger can notch a goal or 2 and really come into his own on a weekly basis, for me it will take time. But as this question was asked now and considering I have only watched Ranger in 1 full (almost 90 min) game, i would have to put Shola in as a starter.

Agree, I think thats easily our best team on paper. Just whatever we do, don't let butt anywhere near the first XI

I sitll want Shola to start, I'm just saying playing that means, that Ranger or Carroll, could fill in if Shola is injured or anything else.

The one i struggled with was R Taylor or Simpson for RB. Based on what I've seen of Taylor in that position and what a Blackburn fan has told me about Simpson i'm going for the latter.

Simpson   S Taylor   Coloccini   Enrique

Guthrie   Barton   Smith   Jonas

Ameobi   Lovenkrands

Nolan is a better player than Smith (just) but right now has nowhere near the stamina required to play football at this level. I hate putting Smith in there but it has to be done.

The one striking feature of this exercise is that everyone is struggling with who plays wide right. I hope the rumour in the Journal that we are bringing a winger in on loan is true, playing central midfielders there isn't the solution long term.

It's one of the reasons we've conceded 1 goal in 5 games. It's not ideal but it's worked thus far tbh.

At the moment I'd sooner have R.Taylor on the right, his crossing can be a bit hit and miss but I'd sooner see Guthrie & Barton in the centre together, despite how Smith's started.

Interesting that, my mate who's a Rovers fan thought Simpson was dreadful. Not seen him play at RB yet due to holidays so can't comment myself, thought he did OK in the middle against Leicester though.

O0 Jonas and Lovenkrands could switch wings during the match if needed
