Ronaldo
Howey was a very good player when you got him on the pitch. The defenders are about right.
Yorkie
Was Beardsley still that good in 1996? Genuine question btw. What was our typical formation back then, by the way? I mean - i've watched the Manu 5-0 highlights a few times and the players were, certainly by the end of it: Srnicek, Barton, Peacock, Albert, Beresford, Ginola, Lee, Batty, Beardsley, Shearer, Ferdinand. How exactly did the front six work? I was thinking this when i've seen people on here talk about how the modern 4-3-1-2 under Keegan was discovered 'by accident'. But surely: Batty Lee Ginola Beardlsey Shearer Ferdinand = Butt Geremi Barton Owen Martins Viduka ...? Or am i barking entirely up the wrong tree? Thespence
How I remember it Pav Howey Batty Watson Albert Bez Lee Shearer Beardlsey Ferdinand Ginola
Ronaldo
More or less, Pedro's days were coming to end when Shearer arrived though. Rolled back the years with that peformance against Boro at home though, with Shearer (and Ferdinand?) out.
Guest firetotheworks
Beardsley and Lee often switched iirc, but the whole of that midfield was really mobile. It was only really Ginola who ever stuck to his position on the left. Beardsley wasn't as good as he had been by '96, but still good enough to be considered better than anyone else you'd dare consider over him.
Yorkie
Was his role at all similar to Owen's in that little run-in then? Say what you like about the little twat (which he is, undoubtedly) - he was extremely good in that run towards the end of the season. Keegan got it spot on with him like. Ronaldo
No, completely different types of player.
James
Beardsley was like Milner only with much better technique.
Guest firetotheworks
Was his role at all similar to Owen's in that little run-in then? Nah, Beardsley was a little dream weaver, he made things happen, but was also there popping up to bang them in. Basically he was f***ing lush. Like a better Arshavin. Guest Stephen927
No Kevin Nolan, some people have short memories.
Ronaldo
Beardsley was the type of player who could make any team look good going forward.
Guest firetotheworks
I just loved how many players could step up when the main men were out. Remember Lee when Beardsley was out?
Thespence
Key into YOUTUBE "Peter Beardsley Tribute" watch the lot nee skimming & then you will see James was correct when he said "Milner only with much better technique"
