newsted
Stand outs include the spurs semi-final, beating spurs 6-1 in the cup and him being humiliated when John Gregory took him off before half-time (not injured) after much piss-taking. Seems like he's rightly regained respect since retiring. I think his house got done and that pissed him off hugely, which I can't blame him for, and he left with some bad words about us, which I can blame him for, so I was right up for the booing at those two games. The Villa one was fucking great, it really got to him, and he was in such a strop with Gregory, who's an egotistical shit as well, that I couldn't boo any more because I was laughing so much! Every touch, "BOOOOO!!!!", he couldn't handle it. He's always spoken well about us since, but he gets paid for that. Laurent Robert was much better, like. Discuss. He said on that Sky Sports programme with Jeff Stelling that he turned down the chance to move to Barcelona because of the plans Keegan said he had for him and the club. 4 months later, Keegan walked, Dalglish came in, Ginola was dropped for Elliott (which tbf won us the Champions League spot) and he ended up at Spurs in a relegation threatened/lower mid-table team. I know he won the League Cup and Player of the Year, but I'd be a bit pissed off too if that happened to me.
Guest Howaythetoon
Robert scored more and created more but in terms of skill, flair and originality, Ginola was something else. I don't think there was anything like him at the time as a so-called wide man.

Barca were in for him when KK was still here and KK somehow convinced him that NUFC would achieve more than them To be fair, under KK, had he stayed, we would have probably been competing for European honours just as much as domestic honours. Dalglish basically thought he was lazy though, aye? Ginola, at full pelt, was something else. We've been graced with him, Robert and Ben Arfa like. Superior Acuña
I think there was an interview with John Beresford where he reckoned Ginola was never the same after he got sent off at Highbury in the FA cup? I was only 7 but I remember that as being a dark night.

I was only 7 but I remember that as being a dark night. Ginola wasn't the same for us after he was wrongly sent off, if he hadn't been sent off in that match he would probably been player of the year because he had been world class up until the Arsenal cup game. Skirge
Both were brilliant players that were an utter joy to watch, they loved us we loved them. Was SO hard to see Ginola playing for Spurs & Villa at least we never suffered that with Robert, he stripped off and was gone.

Mick
If anybody hasn't seen the goal Ginola scored against Ferecvaros they should look it up, it's arguably the best goal I've ever seen scored at St James' Park.

Yeah, Lee Fucking Dixon, now a fucking pundit, clattered him from behind every time he got the ball. the ref let him do it, and David eventually reacted and got sent off, shouting as he went down the tunnel "they won't let me play!" - meaning the officials. He was never the same again, Bez is right on that. I was furious, if you can imagine that.
Ronaldo
Robert had more end product but Ginola was a better player. Good assessment. It kinda fills in the blanks (if you'd never seen either of them play) while also being a bit of a contradiction in terms. Robert made the difference in games far more often, and he (along with Bellamy) totally transformed an average side into one of the best 3 in the country, so he gets the nod ahead of Ginola for me. Mick
Why do you think a sending off would affect a player like him so much though? I haven't got a clue but you could see it happen without knowing why, it was as if something just snapped in him. The decision was a shocker and the ref was a disgrace that night as Ginola had chunks kicked out of him every time he was on the ball until he lashed out. Ginola had already been booked for being fouled, yes, he was fouled and yes, he was booked. It wasn't the FA cup, it was the quater final of the league cup and we should have won that game but for the bastard ref as they should have had at least one player sent off. Without a doubt, Robert had that explosiveness that worked really well. Bellamy floating out to the left with Robert was stunning to watch. But Ginola just had that class when he moved. He could create something absolutely stunning when he wanted to, just didn't have the same drive. Plus Robert was crackers.

That was a cracker, but Shearer's volley v Everton and his sidefoot volley v Villa beat it for me. This is where it becomes more like art than science. Ginola gets it for me because of the way he played with the ball before he volleyed it, you would be a cheeky bastard to try that during training yet he pulled it off during a match, I just stood up in disbelief. I couldn't speak, all I could do was stand up and point while laughing like a little lass. I kept turning around to my mates and pointing towards the goal without saying anything.
