Mr. Snrub
Xavi is definitely a footballing genius. You have to be to retain possession as much as he does. His vision, awareness and close clontrol is unmatched.

Guest firetotheworks
Xavi everytime Barca are on,and Zidane whenever he was on the box,be it La Liga,CL or World Cups or Euro Champs. Why? Just wondering. Before watching Xavi last season in La Liga I just thought he was a very good player, with excellent passing. Turns out he's the composer of the orchestra. He controls matches. If that's not genius, then I don't know what is.

I'd only put Zidane behind Ronaldo, and maybe Messi soon. I just still think Xavi is a genius, and possibly more useful to a team as a whole.

However Zidane done things I've never seen anyone else do, made everything look so easy aswell. Was like watching something on Fifa at times, when he would just step over and 360 past 3 or 4 players with ease.
Stu
Spain would dominate possession no doubt. Whether they'd break a strong French defense down or not is a bit more troubling. Lizarazu, Thuram, Desailly, Petit, Deschamps, Lebouf, all in top form that night - difficult for anyone to get past. But I think they'd win (the Spanish). Don't think France were good at all in that competition, and the final was more a case of the Brazilians throwing their toys out of the pram than the French being exceptional overall (only really in defense). I.e. irrespective of what happened to Ronaldo that night, the Brazilians turned up expecting to steamroller what looked like a very ordinary French side, found every gate shut because of an organised and resolute French defense, then either gave up or were too frustrated to do anything else. The Spanish on the other hand are a different animal in terms of mentality - they're not perturbed by a side pulling a defensive job on them. They'll just keep on playing the way they do, keep on dominating possession, keep on pressing at an insane tempo, entirely confident in their ability to eventually work an opening, and bar the one-off result against Switzerland that served as a mini wake-up call of sorts, they'll usually dispatch a side looking to primarily defend. Can we rename the thread Xavi vs Zidane ? p.s Xavi wins Bahaha, amazing - some people openly admitting to being idiots on a football forum Thanks for letting us know we can disregard everything you say - good banter though Xavi over Zidane indeed
Guest firetotheworks
The only idiocy is your own, for failing to understand that the comparison isn't like for like. For example, if you have a team full of strugglers would you want a brilliant individual with decent team play, or a brilliant team player who's a decent individual? That is the scenario that's being discussed. Idiot.

(voted as the Best Player of the Tournament by no less than Pele) - he was pretty decent at passing the ball 5 yards as well Xavi is a good player, but Fabregas did in 20minutes what Xavi couldn't do in 90+ minutes. To give Xavi, who is a good player in a good team, the same billing as Zidane, is ridiculous. Why hasn't Ronaldo destroyed you in this thread yet? For example, if you have a team full of strugglers would you want a brilliant individual with decent team play, or a brilliant team player who's a decent individual? That is the scenario that's being discussed. Idiot. You make it sound like Zidane is just a brilliant individual player and not a team player. Granted unlike Xavi, Zidane played further up and was not at the base of the midfield, but when Zidane was playing for France, most of French attacks went through him, whether that be through a simple pass, taking on players at ease or his trademark roulette. When he beats players, it opens up room for the other players which is why Zidane was a both a brilliant individual and team player. Yes Xavi has the highest passing rate, but whilst those were important to retain possession, how many of them created meaningful attacks let alone goals? I also disagree with Messi's assertion that Xavi's close control is unmatched. Messi has as good if not better ball control especially when taking on players and if the comparison extends to previous players, then Zidane's ball control was also superior. Fugazi
Xavi's throughballs are amazing, you just have to watch a video of him from last season to see that. You can extend your latest post to your previous post and conclude that you think Xavi is better than Zidane because he plays 100+ throughballs every match. I think all of the Xavi-worshippers have missed the point I made, I'm not slating FTTW's post because I don't think Xavi's very good, I'm slating his post because Zidane was THAT good. To try and put Xavi on the same pedestal right now is a sleight against Zizou. Xavi is a very good player who does a lot of good things, including keeping possession for his team, but when people harp on about his 'incredible number of passes' I begin to wonder why Scott Parker isn't rated so highly Also, why would a highlight reel of Xavi's 'assists' include the 60-70 5yard passes that he makes game-in, game-out? How come we didn't see any of Xavi's throughballs in the WC final? Fabregas only had 20minutes and he managed an assist...
mrmojorisin75
Stu, get a grip man seriously. I have never said Xavi is better than Zidane, in fact in the same post you've quoted i said Zidane had/has: "much more natural talent and will rightly be remembered as one of the greats and also be held in higher regard than Xavi due to his sublime talent" What on earth are you finding so difficult to understand? It's truly starting to intrigue me.
