Nothing mentioned about money there, simply that they wanted us to commit to buying him if we stayed up. Seems pretty fair to me.

I guess Ashley isn't so sure after all.

Aye does seem fairly simple, although there is always more to it.

Dassier has his face in the media far too often.

So he's basically now saying we saw what happened with Werder today and went back in for him?

Not sure about that, think he's just saying we knew the score and what he wanted. We simply refused to comply.

Yeah just read the original article. To be honest though if they're forcing us to buy him if we stay up, I can see why we might have second thoughts. What happens if he does turn out to be shit, we stay up by the skin of our teeth, and then have to pay €5m for him anyway? I like the "option to buy", not being "forced to buy".

Exactly, our biggest problem is, that we should of been doing deals this complicated weeks if not months ago.

Imagine if Birmingham had done that agreement to get Benitez? They stayed up comfortably even though he wasn't great, and would have been tied down to paying £7m for a player they didn't want. Defeats the purpose of a loan deal really.

It has been going on for weeks though, there'll be more twists and offers yet.

Can you not just offer a really shit contract so he has to go back to Marseille?

It's them trying to secure some value for him. They don't want us to be shit and only just stay up but then give him back (because he can't have had much effect) then them be stuck with a player whose stock is even lower. Wasn't a £3m clause mentioned about next year or something?

I ignore her dis-interest and bombard her with updates irrespective.

I can't see many clubs agreeing to a clause where they must buy after the loan deal. They'll be stuck with him until January if they're not careful.

We have to bear in mind that Dassier is an ex-journo. He is probably far better connected to the French media than most Presidents. They've been running a whole series of stories which have suggested that the player is about to go, only for nothing to materialise. Directly underneath that last quote on the webpage, the Bremen director is quoted as saying they're not interested.

It seems to me we're still the front runners. Ashley is probably thinking that's there's no point in upping the offer if there's no competition. The key is that the player has his heart set on joining us.

I've got to admit, I've warmed to the idea of this move. Hughton actually has a very good record of dealing with our own bad boy, Joey. If you remember, shortly after Hughton took over, there was word of a training ground spat, and Barton was dropped from the squad for the next game. No fuss, all dealt with in-house. Since then, he's been as good as gold. He accepted finishing off the season as second choice to Guthrie, and recently no player has been more enthusiastic in their praise of Hughton. In fact, he recently said that the club should be careful to give Hughton a longer contract, in case he was poached - like he was worried that might happen.

Hughton has that gentlemanly manner, but growing up as a kid of mixed-race in East London in the 60s and 70s must have been difficult. He may have a natural way of winning that kind of wayward character's respect that's not immediately obvious.

If Ben Arfa does come here, I think Hughton is the reason, and if it works, Hughton will be the reason as well.

Well they've supposedly got someone willing to pay them up front for him. Why on earth would they take our offer without any guarantees?

It seems to me they've identified the fact that he could be key to our survival and fancy him to do so.

Alternatively as Cronky says, Bremen aren't interested at all and they're simply trying to force our hand by lying. It does seem a little suspicious how often he's in the media over there. That latest article implies they just rang him up and asked.

Bah fuck it, I just want this shit over and done with.
