The Prophet
what is a positional depth chart? It allows people to go into full FM mode and start sticking players in positions they quite clearly can't play.
Rich
what is a positional depth chart? It's an American thing, innit? Only time I've seen it is on NFL games.
Shak
Our base D looks weak to me, but our nickel package should be strong with Steven Taylor providing the interior pass rush. Hopefully we can pick up a wideout or two off waivers as well.

Stu
what is a positional depth chart? It's an American thing, innit? Only time I've seen it is on NFL games. It sounds crap whatever it is, and im still no closer to understanding it. Danny Simpson is our first choice right back, but who do we select when he's unavailable? i.e. S.Taylor can slot in several positions (some would argue that he's less of a liability/offers more going forward at RB) so rather than look at him as purely an understudy to Colo/Willi, you take into account him being a backup for RB (ahead of R.Taylor or Tavernier). Similarly, Jonas and Marveaux appear to be interchangable between the wide positions (they might even be able to play inside forward) so we don't have to look at them as just a LW or a RW position. It helps to see the positions where we actually have a decent amount of cover (RM) and highlight the positions where we're looking 1 injury away from disaster (LB, CB). Rich
This type of thread gets made every summer, like. I'm sure I did one a few years ago, or at least contributed to one. It's not that difficult to understand. But of course it's easier for people like me, Prophet and Shak to be all sarcastic about it all than actually explain it properly. MKSC
It's not a traditional way of looking at a squad over here, but if you follow american sports then you'll have seen it at one time or another. Although I don't see how it is hard to understand how it works. If you can grasp the concept of players having the ability to play multiple positions, and understand that you need 11 different players to make up a team then you kind of have the basics licked. Well done.

Stu
OP Updated - interesting to see that we're only carrying a couple of knocks and the 'newer' players seem to be able to fit into a variety of positions, which only gives us greater squad depth. Couple of fringe players have been brought back into the fold (Guthrie, Perch) while the trio of Harper, Smith and Ranger are frozen out at the moment. Based on 4-4-2/4-4-1-1/4-1-4-1 Players at top of positional depth chart assumed starters, irrespective of injury or suspension. Rich
Ah, this again. You're persistent if nothing else Stu. Anyway, I'll actually try to mix being an arse with some contributions this time: Vuckic is fit to play RM and LM but not CM or AM/FW? Interesting... he's back in full training now, by the way, so he might just be available full-stop. Also can't make sense of Tiote not being included in the CM pool when we tend to play 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 a fair bit and he plays that role, Richardson being ahead of Smith in all areas is very debatable and Smith not being included in the ST pool after his delightful appearance up there against Fulham is just downright negligent. I think Perch would be ahead of Gosling at right-back and also that he would be in the mix for LB ahead of Tavernier/Kadar at the moment if push came to shove. Pure opinion though, really. With Shola only suffering a "knock", Vuckic back training, Santon looking better and Williamson not far off at all we could even have a fully-fit squad come October. Time for a shocking injury to a key player now, I suppose.
