Froggy is right that this entire argument started with a strawman. Ten Hag was referring explicitly to ManU’s lack of signings in the January window in the Telegraph article referenced (which wasn’t directly linked, either). And, I mean, Ten Hag’s not wrong. Signing a proper striker in January might’ve seen them compete with Arsenal for 2nd, since their defense was otherwise solid and they really only lacked goals this season.

Even that has two arguments in it. Not signing a striker, yes bad but own fault. Lack of signings in general, bollocks.

That means you didn’t solve all of your problems, not that you didn’t invest and I your opponents did.

They could have signed a proper striker last summer but they spunked £80m on Antony and paid £60m for Casemiro (absolutely fine btw), but he spent an absolute fortune. Manage the money and squad better.

Liverpool have been linked with every midfielder going.

I've not seen much of Thuram, but if he's half as good as his numbers suggest he'll be some player. I wonder if we're in the mix.

He would have been on the list I think.

However, the guy we actually bid for last summer, who is a similar 6/8 was Kouadio Kone, and it's a bit quiet with him at the moment, and so perhaps we move for him again instead.

Solid signing, that. Will do very well there

Not sure tbh. Very one paced (so is Bruno tbf). Don’t think he ever imposed himself on a game. To say he was patchy at Dortmund would be a compliment.

Think Italy or Spain would’ve suited him better.
Still, for nowt I guess it’s worth a shot.

Kouadio Kone is great. He'd be a fantastic fit for us.

He’s more insufferable than Klopp, around £200 million spent last summer

Just downright lying as well. They had the second biggest spend after Chelsea and only recouped £12m or so.

Perhaps, but you did fall for the strawman.

Why are we this bothered about what ten Hag has to say man? My goodness.

I didn't post it. I never post Man United articles on here. That must be the WUM, arrogant side of me that makes me refrain from doing so.

To be fair though it is the Other Clubs Transfers thread. If we can't talk about Man United signings in here where can we?

It is ridiculous that Man United brought in Weghorst to solve their goal scoring problems. It's honestly as bad as when we signed Shefki Kuqi.

I'm not buying defending ETH by saying he asked for Antony when he was half the price though because I assumed he signed off on the deal in front of them.

We had Ronaldo and Martial in the summer though. Martial was a crock and Ronaldo left mid-season. Circumstances change. That's the entire point of a winter transfer window.

Regardless of what came before, when the January transfer window opened we were in dire need of a striker. Manchester United have to do better than Wout Weghorst.

Let's be honest, the manager has absolutely nothing to do with the transfer fees.

He asked for Antony early. He also wanted De Jong which was never going to happen but our comical recruitment team chased him all summer anyway only to end up overpaying for Casemiro late on. That one worked out luckily enough.

I can see the same thing happening this summer. By the sounds of things, Levy won't sell Kane to another Premier League club. We'll probably chase him all summer anyway only to end up panicking and paying £30m more than necessary for someone like Vlahovic or Ramos.

Then you do what other clubs do, sell to buy.

 good one. Only way we can actually sell players is by subsidising their wages from the stupid contracts we gave them. We're probably still paying Alexis Sanchez something.

Didn't Villa bid for Maguire in January? Sell him, loan a CB as backup and there's the money for a better striker than Weghorst.

You're painting a picture of extreme dysfunction that absolves ETH of any blame. And maybe that's the closest thing to the truth, but I'd still say that unless he was outright lied to about the January budget then it seems ridiculous for him to be calling anyone out for the winter window after an obscene amount of was spent in the summer. Best case he was naive / ignorant of the club's budget and how spending £80m+ on a luxury may force trade-offs elsewhere.

For all the shit the Glazers rightly get for taking money out of the club, the backing they give any manager has always been plenty. No doubt he'll get another £200m to spend this summer as well?

They don't give any backing. Not a penny of their own money has been anywhere near the club.

We can only spend £120m this summer, the rest would need to be made up from sales. So please buy McTominay.

We will have a lot of outgoings this summer.

I have very little time for you unlike the others I responded to, but I will say that I never called you dumb and I think you're quite the opposite of that, which sadly makes everything you say that much worse. I said your analogy was dumb, which it was. You're one of a small number of people on here that are so blinded by bitterness and hatred of Man United that your posts about us are filled with contempt. The same four or five posters like the same anti Man United comments every time.

Also, any time anyone tries to have a go at me on here the majority of posters jump to my defence and tend to speak quite highly of me. That's not to say I don't have my moments of seeing red and/or responding with utter guff, but I'm aware of that unlike you. Mods and admins will see posts I've deleted because I feel like I'm being too harsh, coming across as too arrogant or just being a plain idiot.

99% of the time I never reply to you directly. Any posts of mine you reply to are filled with derison and sarcasm like your stupid analogy above. You act like I'm arrogant about my club but it's not true. On the day of the league cup final I asked Beren to ban me for 24 hours because I didn't want my presence rubbing anyone up the wrong way on what was such a monumental occasion for your club. Those aren't the actions of someone who's only intention to is to wind people up.

You also need to have more self awareness when you say I have no humility. You have a history of being disliked on this forum. So much so that when you constantly replied to my posts having a go at me I used to receive multiple PM's about how much you bothered other posters, so don't try and have a go at my character because you disagree with what I say. I've been on this forum for 13 years and had hundreds of conversations about Man United with zero issues. The fact you and I can't do that is not my problem but yours.

You're best putting me on ignore. It's very rare you have been able to reply to my posts with any sort of respect. It's never going to change.

Hold on. So just to get this straight, I post about Ten Haag, you quote me, call my point dumb, and the solution here is that I should have put you on my ignore list.

I really don't think so like, I can obviously talk about Man United and Ten Haag if I want, and not that it matters but I’ve been on here coming up to 20 years. Who cares? If you quote me and outright call my point dumb, there's a good chance I'll bite, regardless of who’s saying it, and I’m pretty sure when you post something directly inflammatory like that, you either know that’ll be the case, or that was your intention.

To my mind it's a perfectly reasonable analogy, the fact that you're calling it dumb without meeting it head on speaks volumes imo. Anyone can righteously complain about the mismanagement of Man United and be completely right about that – it’s not something that anyone on here is unfamiliar with - but Ten Haag wasn’t talking about that, he was talking about how Man United didn’t spend anything in January, the context being that Man United had spent £211m in the summer, more than every club except Chelsea. That, on its face, is a risible point to be making and defending imo.

As I've said a few times on here, it's ironic that it's exactly the sort of arrogance and lack of self-awareness that stereotypical Man United fans specialise in that makes the automatic dislike towards the club and its fans a self-fulfilling prophecy. Obliviously and arrogantly thinking that everyone dislikes them because of things like jealousy, the club's stature, or a patronising presumption that others are ill-informed. Essentially the 'This is Manchester United' of it all amongst the fandom, which is, at least to my mind, the actual reason in itself for the dislike.

As an aside, I know you’re a fan of bringing up who likes who or whatever from like 10+ years ago like. I know I’m not the only one you like mentioning this too either and while it’s incredibly juvenile and honestly, who cares? It’s also not really a stone I’d be throwing either tbh.

As I said, I'd genuinely like to talk about Man United in exactly the same way we're all able to with fans of other clubs on the board. Somehow with you and Man United though it always ends up like this. It must just be a me problem, even when I'm not here.

Being pedantic pulling up "backing" mind. The money spent on the playing squad has been high anyway.

You'll surely get about £70-80m selling people like Fred and Maguire as well?

I don't want Fred sold but he's heading into the last year of his contract. £15-20m I would have thought if he was to leave.

Maguire? Who's buying him? Big wages, and domestic reputation is in the dumps. I'd be delighted with £30m.
