With Trafford and any 2 of Cunha, Mbembo, Ekitike or Pedro, and it would have been a different season. I'm sure Howe would have made that point to his bosses.

Still probably should have been better but there is enough "mitigation" (in my view) for Howe to be given the chance next season.

Hopefully the club can get him players from the top of his list this summer.

Well obviously if we had better players you'd expect we'd be doing better but if we're wanting to fish in the same pond as Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea unfortunately we aren't going to get players from the top of our list.

That's why when we weren't so lazy at scouting we could pull out gems like Bruno and Isak who would never have been on those clubs radars. That's what we need to get back to doing.

Would love to move this thread along a bit...

What are people expecting from the summer/ next season? Any evolution in style? A return to a more intense press? Quiet or busy window? What type of players are we expecting to come and go?

We have to be aiming for champions league again it's simple as that, I don't buy this we need a season to rebuild and then push on the following year,we have finished 4th, 7th 5th, the owners will be pushing for them heights the amount they have Invested.

I also think we might explore the European market more and get players in early on to build a team early and not chasing last minute in the Transfer window

Getting back in the CL would be nice but I can't have that as my expectation given the competition.

I do feel people are massively underestimating the challenge of turning around a sinking ship and rejuvenating a squad in need of a fresh voice.

In the PL era I don’t think it’s ever been done, usually when managers are on the chopping block but are given the extra season they do get sacked quickIy I think? I don’t have the stats on this though.

Arsenal and City are locks for top 4, very likely Man U finish 3rd or could even push a title challenge if they get the right appointment and replace Casemiro well.

Liverpool have been shit this season but easily top 4 can imagine the same again.

Villa are ahead of us, and Spurs have a younger team than us and less to do the the transfer market.

Chelsea can’t be this bad forever but you never know.

If we get top 7 I’d be happy personally, if the entire season is a slog and we are miles off top 6 though I will be disappointed. Below 8th is unacceptable.

Yeah, if only we had signed players we had barely any chance of getting anyway, it could have all been different. If only Vini Jr and Mbappe had signed, it could have solved our problems in attack.

But we were there 2 times In last 3 seasons. If Villa quality given they spent less than us I don't see why that isn't the aim.

In fairness we should have got Trafford, and Ekitike we dealt with that poorly we should have sold Isak first since he was clearly a replacement.

Cunha and Mbeumo were nailed for Man U from about March.

Villa haven’t had a shit season under Emery, really they should have qualified for the CL in 3 straight years

If we load up on exciting young players this summer then get Europa league next season I would be over the moon.

We definitely need a signing to be excited about.

I agree but that has to be the aim, if we are setting for less than Villa there's something wrong in my opinion, we have spent more and they came back up after us.

Yeah but we overachieved, I cant have that as my baseline expectation. The club might, but me personally nah.

We have had a huge set back they still have all of the momentum. Next year we are competing with Spurs to catch the top 6 imo and hope one or more of them fall apart.

If all of them are on form then it’s unrealistic to get CL, even without the extra games. We are the team that needs the biggest overhaul.

True, though it’s hard to say whether City would have triggered the Trafford clause anyway, or what the truth was behind the Ekitike/Isak thing. It’s pretty clear he’s never been that keen on joining given he’s snubbed us twice.

I was obviously being a bit facetious, but I do think those with doubts are generally bright enough to take into account the poor transfer business in the summer. We clearly overshot, going for players that was generally unlikely to sign, but we can take that into account whilst also judging how things have gone with managing what he actually does have at his disposal.

Yeah we tried competing with the big boys instead of taking the best of the rest.

How did we overachieve, we finished up there 3 seasons running, so have Villa overachieved?

Man utd might go from 16th to champions league.

We need to switch from this mentality like that we overachieved and are little old Newcastle, we spent far far more than teams getting Europa league/conference league etc.

Yup we overachieved and the Chelsea's, Manchester Uniteds and Spurs have all underachieved.

Villa are overachieving at the minute too.

Do you expect us to put perform our budget?

Villa under Emery are just a weird side. Current GD of 4, last year it was 7. Whenever I watch them, they just aren't very impressive but they seem to be very good at just getting things done. They've scored less than us this season too.

Transfer record is very patchy as well.

The tables have turned though. You can't say we've spent more when £250m of that is essentially dust. We need to spend just to get back to top 8 while they'll spend hoping to consistently break into the top 4.
Last summer has left us playing a massive game of catch-up.

Agree with you, but thats not a Howe problem - club needs to be better at scouting. I don't give him credit for Bruno or Isak...frankly no idea who was responsible but its a shame they weren't around to do the same.

The midfield has been an even bigger issue than the attack for me so I don't know if I agree if the right forwards were signed that it would be drastically better. This season has been one that had signs of what was to come back in October and there was never any signs of improvement. Idk I feel like not getting the right forwards really undersells the issues and is somewhat delusional.

I know it worked before but this year they failed to protect the back 4, establish any level of pressure and create chances, if you don't adapt and improve you go backwards as this season as proved. I am not worried about signings, across his entire tenure there have been successes more than failures or there wouldn't have been CL football this year to begin with but I am concerned about the ability to adapt when something isn't working.

I do think he deserves a chance to put it right though and we'll see how the summer goes but I just really think getting Etitike instead of Woltemade for example really undersells what the week to week issues have been.
