that clearance into the East stand today! [emoji38]

That was funny, but one thing I will give Pope in those situations, he knows his limitations and gets rid. Doesn’t try and do something he knows he’s not good at.

Obviously doesn’t tell the full story. As he has made a few mistakes with shots. Fulham was a real howler. Spurs was poor and then crap from Burn to top it off.  Chelsea he should have done better, but it was also criminal defending.

Without looking into it, I don’t fully get the stat? Has there just been some bad finishing when it was a high xG chance? Isn’t there another one they use called post-shot xG or something?

Either way. I still found it interesting. His kicking has always been crap. I think him punching it is over-played as well. Everyone seems to be copying Arsenal with loading the 6 yard box this season. Followed by loads of grey area fouls on the keeper and other defenders. Fair enough if he wants to punch in a lot of those situations.

I do think we take for granted what a good ‘keeper’ he is.

He's absolutely fine outside of his kicking. Thankfully we tend to always have a ball player nearby to ping it long in his place. Still only a handful of keepers in the PL I'd take over him.

Thinking back, who do you think was better, Given or Pope? Given was an outstanding shot stopper but was glued to his line for corners and free kicks (I still remember those leaked pre match notes from Mourinho). Pope is also a great shot stopper, but probably stronger at coming out for corners and crosses. Both weren’t great with their feet, but Given defo edges that.

Hard comparison given how football has changed. Given's kicking wasn't wonderful either. Pope's 22/23 was absolutely unreal, sans Liverpool (h)

Pope. Given made some outrageous saves. I think Pope makes a lot of world class saves look routine because he’s a big fucker. Alisson is a bit like that too, IMO.

Pope is better controlling his box and off his line. I also think his deficiencies around his kicking wouldn’t have been so obvious back in Given’s day and vice versa.

I remember Leicester scored a hat trick of headers against Given all from about 2 or 3 yards out.  Glued to the goal line like a scared rabbit.  Thankfully I'm sure Shearer also scored a hat trick that day (I think).

Shearer scored a hat trick vs. Leicester in the 4-3 in 97. Hislop was in goal.

The 3x headers you speak of was the following season. Think you’re being a bit harsh on given for the first two headers. He’d only have been 21 as well at the time and his first season in top flight:

Fair enough but I was never in the Given fan club.  Terrible at crosses and he couldn't wait to "abandon ship".

Yes that's the game I remember.  Well done.  I think we agree that Given was shite that day.

PL footballers usually do.

So Given left for more money?  Yeah?  Not the die hard Toon fan that is portrayed by many fans then?

When footballers sign for new clubs they usually do get a pay rise yeah.

Whatever.  You are never going to get my point.  Anyhoo, Pope for me all day.  Far superior to Given.  ;)

I get the point you’re making. I just disagree that he was desperate to jump ship. It took him 12 years before he jumped ship.

He was no. 1 for us for over a decade, played in cup finals, champions league and in Robsons side that challenged for the title. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to sack the club off that’s ran by Ashley and managed by Kinnear.

It didn't take him 12 years to "jump ship".  Don't be silly.  He was happy enough for eleven and half years but when things got a bit tough he couldnt wait to fuck off.  That is my point.  My other point is Pope is/was far superior to Given which this thread is about actually.

12 years and 463 appearances, third in the all-time list. Fuck me, what a mental take.

Fuck off man and read my posts instead of looking up pathetic stats, saddo!

I don't blame him for jumping ship, I would've done similar.
