So from what I've seen...you pay 40 odd quid for a "basic membership" which gives you a chance of getting a ticket? Or am I wrong?....sounds so much like something INEOS would do

Yes, but if it was INEOS it would be £40 plus an extra £10 if you’re disabled and need to use a wheelchair.

Why hasn't more been made or of? Seems like a way of getting a lot of money while actually delivering nothing...as much as I'd want to get a ticket, if I was going to spend £40 on a chance of something I'd put it on euro millions

Because it isn’t unique to Newcastle. We’re just copying what every other major club does*. It’s the norm now.

 

*obviously every club has a slightly different way of doing things. Some have tiered membership, some based on what you’re prepared to pay, some based on ‘loyalty’, but the principle is always the same - pay to have the chance of buying a ticket.

Fair enough...just don't understand how it's never been raised in the media....especially as it is essentially gambling

I've not bothered getting a membership this year, and just asked about for tickets from friends/family when I've wanted to go.

The worrying thing woukd be if more people do that as the membership is costing money with no return, and then ballots are just full of touts/people from other clubs wanting tickets

I've no problem with the club doing a ballot especially when tickets are difficult enough to get hold of anyway, but charging for the 'privilege' of being in a draw where its quite realistic you could never get anything is exactly the same as gambling.

 

I'm sure I'm not alone in not being able to justify spending £40 odd just for a chance to pay  for a ticket

It’s not really gambling. You’re paying for something concrete that non-members don’t have - access to tickets. Of course you can’t guarantee how many, but it’s fairly well known how likely or unlikely it is. 
 

They could equally make the ballot open to all but it would be absolute chaos of away fans and touts. If you think now is bad then try making the ballot free to enter.

So you're not paying for anything concrete at all...paying for a chance of a win is the literal definition of gambling

Not really. ‘Gambling’ insinuates that you have some control over the outcome or at least the odds I’m getting. 
 

If I gamble on football, I can choose what odds I take for a particular bet. Even if I play the lottery, I can choose what numbers I pick. 
 

In this instance there is no choice. You are literally paying for the service of entering the ballot.

You know having a membership also means you can buy tickets outside of the ballot ?

 

Either via members general sale or in season ticket resale 

 

It’s really not difficult to get tickets this season even if you fail in the ballot 
 

Either you can do it on your own if you can be available on Monday mornings, or if you can’t then get on the Friends list of someone who is available on Monday mornings and knows how to work the system

It’s really not difficult to get tickets this season. Either doing it on your own, or being on the Friends list of someone who knows how to work the system 

 

I didn't actually and that's not how our website presents it. I've never been one to game the system so don't know how it actually works. They make it look like a charge just to have a chance of of a ticket....I know 40 quid for a membership isn't a lot in the grand schemes but it's the difference between me and my son eating for a week

It seems you’ve misunderstood the purpose of the membership then

 

It’s a fee you have to pay to be able to buy tickets and there’s various ways to buy a ticket:

 

Ballot

General Sale

Season Ticket Resale 

 

It says on the ticketing info for every game that tickets are available for general sale to members and gives the date for when this happens. Almost always a Monday at 10am

Aye, been blocked many, many, many times in the past 

 

Have to either forget about F5ing for a few hours and wait for it to unblock you, or switch wi-fi off and use mobile signal instead 

 

Although that’s based on last season, I’ve not needed to F5 since they restarted the 10am queues

I don't want to be insensitive to the fact that money is tight and not everyone has the ability to pay. 

 

I just honestly don't get it though. People want to win and transfers, but don't want to contribute to it. Lot of the crying over access to tickets come across as cringe entitlement.

 

The alternative is to eliminate the membership and tack on to the cost of tickets. That makes it even more unequal as the prices will only get higher and higher. 

 

The membership cost is the way that you as a fan gets to support the club in an affordable way. $40 for a year worth of access, it's less than $1 a week. And it gives you the chance to buy a ticket at (what I believe is) well below market price given the demand there is. 

 

If you were to just let the market dictate prices tickets will easily be double and SJP would still be full every week.

 

I have not won a single ballot entry. Wish I would but I don't feel entitled to winning one. Did you have better access when Mike Ashley was running the club? I'm sure, but look at the shit you were watching. 

 

I would rather get limited access to tickets but have a great club that challenges for silverware than cheap tickets to absolute garbage.
