Unfortunately those days are gone and it still rankles me now that the Mancs wanted it more than us 2 years ago, it was fucking embarrassing and a major low pissing all over the reputation of a fanbase built over the years, for the Blaydon Races not to be sung once at a major showpiece was sickening and you’ve got to question if we have lost our identity completely at this point.

Following Newcastle home and away down the years and being part of such a loyal, passionate fan base was a source of great pride. Aside from the odd game eg Arsenal SF and PSG (no chance of getting an away ticket) I just don’t get that anymore.

I was at Man City away in the home end and I think I heard our fans 2/3 times properly over 90 minutes.

 

Like others, whilst I’ll hope for the best on the pitch, I fear for what will, or rather won’t,  happen off the pitch.

The only time I’ve ever done the Transit van thing was Spurs away in the cup in 87, the one where we took 15k down (at least). What an experience that was, camped in a small van with a bunch of mentalists from Walker who had spent the entire night before in The Scrogg on a lock-in. Great times though.

Probably the most fighting I’ve seen at a match. So many proper radgies made the trip - Spurs fans scattered everywhere

Yep, remember it well. As everyone piled out of the stadium it was like a football fan version of Pearl Harbour. Just people steaming in on each other from all angles.

 

Another memory of that day was just how many coaches we took down. We parked our van in a back street near the ground and a lot of the coaches parked around there too. I remember counting the coaches as they came past us and there was 50 of them at least on that street alone.

I was there, meant to go with a mate but he didn't show so I did it on my own, national express as it was free ( worked for them) IIRC they had to open a side paddock as there were too many in the away end, it was a heck of a crush and I was near the back.

I remember from that season we got relagated and then years back in Prem I thought out away support was best in the country in terms of loyal support, always thought other clubs coming to st James would be results driven away ends, plenty of our away ends like Spurs, Stoke, West Ham we would just be loud for 90 mins and everyone would stay full 90. Imagine being 5-0 down 90 mins today, certainly wouldn't be bouncing or full.

 

I met a mate of mine who's Spurs season ticket holder and goes away alot after that heavy cup defeat in 2014/15 and he was saying how our support put any club to shame he'd seen for long as could remember that night...

Yep, I remember spurs fans around us applauding the away end as they left. Mind they had nowt to be pissed off about that night, 3-0 up after 5 or 10 minutes

"Losers mentality still singing when you're losing"

"Are you surprised the atmosphere was shit when they're watching that"

If the atmosphere was good then there's going to be less criticism of it on here surely, hence less comments? Talking to a mate who was there he said it was night and day compared to Liverpool but still nowhere near our best. Tbh I'd say you get a free pass at West Ham anyway due to the state of that stadium.

 

Sunday is the acid test. Let's see what it's like on here after that. Surely can't be any worse than last time and also I'm pretty sure the Liverpool fans will be a lot noisier than what Man Utd were.

Not really, its not the 'shit match atmosphere thread'.  

 

I think the thread just lends itself to those who choose to be negative.

 

Sounded good last night I thought and totally agree, night and day compared to Liverpool. Very strange that evening.

This thread was started 2 years ago because of the downturn in atmosphere from then. Check the very first post on this thread to see what I mean. Sounded OK on TV last night. Lad who was there said it was canny. Been better, been worse so probably not much to comment about. Home fans completely silent.

I always assume that most or all home crowds are ‘bad’ from the POV of the ideal atmosphere that we seem to imagine. 
 

Every away crowd usually has at least a couple of rounds of ‘is this a library’ etc, then they have it done to them when they get back home. 
 

Always hard to know what we’re actually expecting or aiming for when we talk about atmosphere.

Just general backing of the team for me. Doesn't have to be constant chanting as that has never happened anyway. Urging the team forward, making it uncomfortable for the opposition, berating the referee for poor decisions. That's all things that have declined massively over the past couple of seasons.
