Your kids are fortunate that their dad is into going to NUFC games and got them on the ladder early. Also that their dad was willing and able to get them season tickets and also willing and able to take them to away games. For loads of kids that isn’t the case and they’re now frozen out. Someone who is your kids age wasn’t able to get themselves to away games or get a season ticket under their own steam pre-2021 because they were too young. If an 18 year old gets hooked on NUFC now without their parents taking them down the path, then what chance have they got ? They’re frozen out and the “where were you when we were shit” argument you’ve put forward is completely irrelevant in their case. It's become a middle class affair for the most part. I came back to wallsend high st after the match and the queens and anchor were packed with young lads who’d been out since 9/10am on the drink and love the club - they were adamant we’d smash them back at SJP - and jealous I’d gone. They were lads who’d have gone to aways in the past when there was avenues open to non ST holders but now have given up hope. someone said earlier NUST fucked it - it’s not quite that simple but there’s a lot of truth in that. They also reneged on promises to represent fans who jacked in under ashley as regards to trying to keep loyalty points. the NUST board is different now so I’d give them a fair chance but previous boards were ravaged by self interest (the Tory TF lot mainly)

Different people now but the self serving bastards at the time have blood on their hands when it comes to our away support being shite now. Yet it’s interesting to see them flouting the rules they played a part in bringing in midweek in Germany. They have made it even more of a closed shop, which was what they were trying to unlock in the first place.
Maggies
Fairest way would be to allocate more tickets to the ballot including giving members a chance. I’ve got enough points to go to most away games which were built up over many years, but that shouldn’t give me the right to guaranteed away ticket. The loyalty argument is a load of bollocks. I don’t think I’m more or less loyal than majority of other supporters just because I’ve been able to build up a few points. I went to those games because I wanted to, not to build up points. The alternative is we do nothing and the atmosphere just continues to die a slow death. The home atmosphere is less of an issue. Even during peak Robson years the atmosphere wasn’t great for your average run of the mill match. Edited December 15, 2025 by Maggies
Danh1
I don’t like that mind, someone who signs up for a membership getting a ticket over someone who didn’t quite have the right number of points. I had loads of points on my old season ticket, they stand for nothing now. What about a ballot for members with a certain amount of historical points? I’m not saying that as a way to help me out, just feel if you’re giving members access to away tickets there should be something to ensure they’re not going to someone on their first year, who’s never been to a game or show interest before. I thought the old system was fine. Loyalty points but with no checks. Wasn’t the fairest way obviously but generally speaking, if you wanted to go to an away game you would be able to get a ticket. Appreciate it isn’t ideal but unsure what is now. You’re going to piss off a vast number of people whatever the change.

What it meant was that the most loyal, the hardcore, were able to access tickets one way or another and in turn it made for raucous away ends and better support for the team on the road. Agreed and most people against it now weren’t bothered that much about going back back then including some with public profiles - who want to belong to something they were never really a part of and are culpable for dismantling the very thing they’re chasing. Bang on. Some of the people wanting checks were season ticket holders with a very small numbers of points - they’ve had years and years to build it and not done so. Gone now are the days of getting offered a ticket on the way down if travelling ticketless as people are too skitzy.
Whitley mag
The ID checks rightly or wrongly have fucked our away support. I actually used someone else’s ticket on Sunday but not many would rightly risk that these days and the lads who ran buses with multiple tickets for the young lads to attend has died on its arse. It’s become a very middle class and ageing away end to put it politely. Would rather go back to the days of someone pissing down the back of my leg in the Darwen End than what it’s becoming. NUFC91
What I find hard is that a game of football and a day out has become ticket checks, transfer limits, transfer ticket cost etc but you see people at Sunderland away where clearly they aren't there on merit, surely that defeats object.. I actually appreciate the the times of being 18-21 following Newcastle even more now, the defiant support, the getting behind the team no matter what, looking back at some of the away days, I remember west brom away the away end sang Peter lovenkrands for 90 mins, spurs away 4-1 down with a bouncing away end.. I've been to loads of aways, never had a single point on my account because the tickets either came from pals or buses. Being 20-30 years of age and travelling away with pals are some of the most memorable days I've had in my life. Having kids put an end to it, but that's the way it goes. It was ace whilst it lasted. Real shame that the young lads and lasses coming through now can't do the same as most other generations have done. Because as a youngin, experiencing a celebratory or defiant away end makes you realise what football support is really about. Danh1
Can’t wait for Hey Jude to blast at ear splitting volume tomorrow whilst 15% of the crowd join in with it. And then the awful version of Blaydon Races blasted that no cunt joins in with. At least it motivates the players. Maybe we’ll get some effort from them tomorrow. Aye in a lot of cases the trip down there was decided in the pub on the night before then it was a case of how many could squeeze into the Transit minibus amongst plenty of other off the cuff ways of getting there. No ID checks, no 15% of the allocation skimmed off for corporates or club staff. No obstacles put in the way of groups of lads, generally in the 16-40 age bracket, just going around the Country following their team.

I was there on Sunday and I saw a few lads I haven't seen that much over the last few years but know them all from going on Billy Swifts, KBs or John the Badges bus in 2000s. All have done the hard yards but like me now are all wrong side of 40 and have other commitments - work, kids, wife , mortgage etc. we all like a drink and are vocal fans but we don't go all the time, we don't go together any more and we are not as radge (it happens with age - its called growing up / calming down) as we wee when we were 16-25 - we need replaced and you generally don't see the lads that we were anymore... I said in an earlier post there were lots of these lads on wallsend high st when I got back after the derby - maybe not sunderland away but in the leaner years pre ID checks they would have been on the buses to wigan, blackburn, bolton, west brom, burnley, everton, liverpool (the cheaper bus firnedly trips) etc. they're not now Edited December 17, 2025 by OCOCOL

OCOCOL
And people complaining (lots of NUST chatter) about being kettled etc. at St Peters - again not saying its right but if Sunday's policing was a surprise then I am doubting you're a seasoned traveler. Mind having said that the limiting of 9am openings in town probably aligned with more common sense / middle class fans meant our I hardly saw anyone drunk - that to me is just weird at a 2pm kick off away at sunderland
Chicken Dancer
I must say I've never enjoyed the experience at Sunderland away. I thought the cup game last year was the best organised one. If anyone was there, the one in 2012 (Cabaye early goal) was fucking horrible. Penned in walking to the ground from St Peters, getting all sorts chucked off you then only 2 turnstiles working which meant it was real scary getting into the ground. Loads missed our goal IIRC. As I said on Sunday though, the atmosphere from our lot was the worst I'd experienced there. I've been 9 times, though one was in the home end (2006). Would never do that again either - awful, even if I was a kid at the time.
OCOCOL
One positive from Sunday - we found about £17 in £1s and 50 ps outside the ground at FT presumably from mackems chucking coins at us in the escort- this was without really looking either... From the hyprocrite clowns who were calling Coventry they've a few object hoyers of their own. Edited December 17, 2025 by OCOCOL
