A lot of the crowd aren't that invested in it all like our crowd once was. The result isn't of as much importance to a lot of people. You're seeing record amounts of people sloping off early for their HT pint, coming back late after HT, heading for the exits earlier when the game is still in the balance. At one time the thought of having to go for a piss and missing a goal was unthinkable. You'd see people racing down and then quickly back to their seat. People just aren't as bothered any more. I just don't think this is true at all. I remember going to champions league matches as a teen in the late 90s, and asking my dad where everyone was going 40 minutes into the first half, or in the 88th minute. It's definitely different to back then like. You nipped off for a piss on about 40 mins, you could get straight in and there was just a smattering of people on the concourse. Wouldn't be like that now.
Moose
Tonight's game was a great example of why I don't think ultras are a net positive for the atmosphere. Aye sure, when you're in the stadium, the flags, pyro and the synchronised jumping knock your socks off for the first minute or so, then they fade into the background to the point I forget they're even there. Leverkusen scored, they didnt cheer, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. We got a penalty, they didn't explode with fury at the ref, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. We scored, there was no stunned silence for a few seconds followed by a rallying cry, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. They scored a late equaliser, there was no "limbs", they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. The game finished, they didn't applaud, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. Give me a crowd that ebbs and flows depending on what happens on the pitch any day of the week and twice on a Sunday, you'll get some dull atmospheres but you'll also get some cauldrons, much better than having a bunch of numpties wearing balaclavas singing from a pre-prepared song sheet Edited December 10, 2025 by Moose

It's one of the many reasons people prefer the premier league. Many people do not want to hear someone droning on through a loud speaker or doing military-style chants all game. Their atmospheres are crap, their chants are crap, they play music after goals (which is cringey). There are no redeeming features from an aurally aesthetic standpoint. This cultural phenomenon is reflected in music, films and television also and those nations agree because most of the Eurovision songs are performed in English and they all listen to English and American music. They had that small standing section behind the other goal who chanted non stop but with no corelation with what was happening on the pitch, behind the other goal, such should have been a home section was probably 95% NUFC fans, and along the sides the only enthusiasm visible was from other NUFC fans who'd infiltrated their end. Tbf they are regarded in Germany as a "plastic" club. Had a bit crack with the locals in Cologne where we stayed and even though Leverkusen are the nearest team to them (play each other today) they regard Borussia Monchengladbach as a bigger rival because they are seen as a "proper" club. CallumG6
I was surprised at the huge corporate area taking up the right hand side to where us NUFC fans were. Pretty much a whole quarter of a stadium dedicated to corporate boxes. Shite. Decent fans, decent police, shite home atmosphere. Someone said it in the other thread, but we had the place bouncing from our equaliser right through to when they nicked a goal at the end.

Then the stunned silence like a knife through the heart when they equalised was exactly what it should be Imagine you had some wanker still banging a drum with his back to the pitch after conceding that ffs

It can't just be me who enjoys watching the furious and dejected reaction of the opposition fans just after we score, it's great schadenfreude, but you'd get none of that when we score against European opposition cause the gimps in the ultras section wouldn't even notice that a goal went in. As for Leverkusen being a plastic club, I've also heard that to be the case but I don't think that makes the atmosphere better or worse, all Bundesliga atmospheres are much of a muchness, I've been to Bremen vs Mainz and Frankfurt vs Hannover games, all 4 sets of fans I've witnessed in person are pretty much interchangeable with what we saw against Leverkusen, all scripted and choreographed, all generic, all pish! I know Dortmund get a lot of credit for their yellow wall but to me that's just like all the other ultra sections, just on a much larger scale. geordiesteve710
That was wank today as soon as the goal went in. No roars of defiance or chanting in the face of adversity, just continued mute silence. Our away ends have been getting like this for a while now. Only sing when we're winning (or have just scored.) Couldn't believe how shite the home fans/club were either tbf. Flamethrowers as the teams came out, not having our badge on the scoreboard, a lights show at 2 in the afternoon, the odd DJ-led celebrations ar the end. Very little noise aside from a "no noise from the Saudi boys" every 5 minutes or so. Edited December 14, 2025 by geordiesteve710
