Listening to how to win the premier league. The book by the data guy from Liverpool and it has me wondering that with Mitchell firmly in the bin do we have anyone challenging Eddie on who we should buy?

 

I know the popular narrative is we should just let Eddie pick who he wants but I personally think that's a bit of a simplistic take.

Which obviously served us very well that can't be denied. However (you know this was coming ) its an approach which will cause us to miss some gems imo. 

 

I mean we could have had Huijsen a year ago for 1/3 of what we offered for Guehi and a much lower salary as well.

Don’t think we do really (unless it’s a transformative amount), as Eddie often stresses the need for players to be ‘all in’.

Sure, I'm sure we could have persuaded him to sign with a higher clause. Let's not forget our skipper had a clause 12 months ago.

Nah, I don’t think we could have. He chose Bournemouth cos they were prepared to give him exactly what he wanted. 
 

More and more young players and their ‘advisors’ are going down the Bellingham route of choosing clubs to be a stepping stone on the career path they’ve mapped out for themselves. Occasionally, you might find an instance where that works for you, but I’d be wary of it. At least whilst Eddie is our manager anyway, as that just doesn’t align with his MO.

 

As, for Bruno’s release clause, I’d say that was IMO high enough (reportedly anyway), as to be transformative, so those ones I can probably live with.

Well most of our signings have been undervalued or at least great value, and we don't just look for big money PL players. 

 

There'll always be loads of examples of players you could have had more cheaply or players you didn't sign that went on to do well.

That's not really what my question was. Indeed if you see my post I said our transfer business has been excellent. 

 

The question was more relating to are we dismissing potential targets because they are not the managers choIce. It also doesn't mean we can't be successful it just seems our pool of potential players is smaller than most.

Ah OK, well I guess we don't know on that. If we are dismissing good players then we shouldn't be. 

 

It just seems that people are intent on this idea of Howe as only wanting expensive players from the PL.

I don't believe Eddie only wants expensive players from the PL. I do believe Eddie wants the players Eddie wants though.

I made a similar point wrt Trafford. It's been called a Saudi tax but I think really it's an Eddie tax. 

 

If selling clubs are smart they will know that Howe will tend to stick to his guns and he's usually pretty insistent on getting only his preferred targets.
