NUFC Transfer Rumours

Proof?

I think its pretty obvious both him and Milan knew what was coming, why else would he leave his beloved boyhood club for a seemingly cut price fee to come play for us? Not only that but everything you read and hear points to him being desperate to go back to Italy ahead of staying in this league.

Some incredibly non-specific stuff about "high-level talks" from what I can gather. No new names linked, no mention of anything advancing. Couldn't even tell if the supposed "high-level" talks were club-to-club or within NUFC management about placing a bid or whatever.

I'd be a lot happier about the "project" if there's at least one current, in their prime signing amongst them. Even a Jarrod Bowen and one or two like that alongside Jouaen, etc.

Jarrod bowen would be wissa mk2.

Bowen scores goals though...

And he's going to be too old very soon, and be very expensive.

Not the sort of signing we should be making in my opinion, for the same reasons we shouldnt have bought wissa.

Wasn't saying we should sign him.

But you compared him to Wissa!

Bowen got 9 goals and 11 assists in 38 games last season, for a relegated West Ham.

Wissa could only dream of those numbers...

What's that based on or are we just lumping any Premier League player over 28 in the same group?

Because wissa was good for brentford as his game suited their style.

Bowen is good for west ham because he suits their style.

For us he'd be someone who costs a heap of money, for no resale value and a style that doesnt really suit us.

This reads like someone who would suit Howe's style.

20 appearances 1 goal 1 assist.

Last season Wissa made 19 appearances for Newcastle with 1 goal and 1 assist.

Like I said...wissa mk 2 😁

Sorry, im just being facetious, but I just see him being a big waste of money, and we shouldnt be spending big on someone at the end of their career.

There's no doubt hes a hard worker and eddie loves that. But thats not how we played last season. We were much slower and more technical (and crap).

If we continue with that style, it won't suit bowen for the same reason it doesnt suit wissa.

Tonali was cut price because Milan knew his suspension was coming.

He wasn't cut-price - at the time it was the biggest fee ever for an Italian player. Most Italian pressed thought the money was too good to turn down. Same as Isak.

At a point in time that looked like one of our major signals and markets. I think the club identified Serie A and Ligue 1 as leagues with high quality and potential players - often with international and CL experience - where we can price bully teams for players. Make offers the clubs would deem as absurd. And also look for players where main interest is from those leagues rather than PL where we have a better chance of winning.

Signed Botman & Bruno from Ligue 1 - only strong competition was from Milan for Botman. Wanted Etikite but gazumped by PSG - the only Ligue 1 club that could do that to us.

Signed Tonali from Serie A. Linked to Thiaw under the previous regime, linked to multuple Italian based defenders and of course strong links to Ederson.

All of these players identified to come in and play from the off using their experience from those leagues with the possible exception of Etikite.

We looked at England for young players (Hall) that could develop or opportunistic (Barnes & Pope - don't think we sign either without their clubs being relegated and them being available for decent fees) and often both (Tino & Gordon) players beyond the first window.

Last season - the strikers and Elanga went against that previous ethos.

With Ramsey and Thiaw - the best 2 so far - they broadly fit into the previous strategy.

It's not so much a market. But previously we seemed to believe in our signings a lot more - taking more risks. From Isak, to Gordon, to Tonali - we didn't have tremendous evidence they could deliver or in Tonali's case adapt (Italians don't travel well idea) but we had conviction. We made few sacrifices in profile for all 3. Profile wise - Tonali is the perfect Howe midfielder, he's somehow not a perfect fit on the pitch but skills wise and mentality he's perfect which is why it's pretty much worked. Isak - almost the perfect Howe striker, can press, quick, finisher, play off the shoulder primarily but can link it up. And Gordon - crazy press, quick, direct. All 3 great on transition etc. For those 3 we spent a premium but basically got everything Howe would want in a player which is a big reason why all 3 would go for a big profit. perfect Howe players. I think Guehi was that as well - apart from height/aerial dominance, he was the perfect Howe player and would've been worth the premium.

Anyways getting a young Ligue 2(?) star feels like we are getting back on track a bit.

This was caused by teams sitting back. That's not how Howe actually wants to play.

Why? Half the issue with Wissa was with how late he was signed, then the injury. Wasn’t worth anywhere near what we paid, but he’d have been far better in a normal season for him. Beyond age, there’s nothing to say Bowen would be anything like him anyway.

If you're right then we're in for another rough ride next season, because teams are going to do exactly the same thing when they play us.

Wissa has been "fit" since Jan and despite no preseason we know preseason prep isn't 4 or 5  months long.

I dont think signing older players should be an instant no but with current financial restrictions in place Bowen is 30 at the end of the year he's not wissa and has done amazing at his current club.

Would this translate elsewhere?

How big of a fee would they demand is there if no relegation clause?

If we signed him and got 4 years out of him and he left on a free Would that be financially wise or viable?

I can see why the club would be cautious about any older player. I have said this before no signing is a gaurentee slam dunk its all about mitigation and risk signing players with no resale value adds to that risk.

We also didn't sign players that fit that system well either. On paper - Elanga and Wissa work in a Howe style but they really don't. We need a gradual pivot to technical style. Eg quick players that can press but are better footballers than we have like a Szobo. Not inferior technicians like Elanga or Wissa.
