Paul Mitchell to leave club by mutual consent at end of June (Official)

He came into the job and almost instantly had to sell two promising young players to avoid a points deduction.

I think the comment was ill judged but not a criticism of who Howe etc had signed, just the PSR position the club was in, which is probably fair comment.

It's pretty clear this is what he meant, as being careless with PSR has meant we were unable to spend for the last 3 windows.

It was something that absolutely needed sorting out.

Really weird that the quote keeps being used as a stick to beat him with.

He said our past transfers are “not fit for purpose”.

Then basically Howe won a cup the first time in 70 years and go back to ECL without any reinforcement for 3 windows.

Genuine question, how can the fans not expecting Mitch to deliver this window? He totally deserved this.

It's his job to deliver, I also feel this is the first window we can really judge him properly. Until I see him signing duds, I don't really see any reason to doubt him.

The guy has done nothing positive so far (besides the Kelly sale?) and took Howe on last summer causing unneeded unrest which led to a shaky start to the PL campaign.

Monaco fans largely hate him for talking a lot and doing nothing of note.

Granted, he hasn’t had the time to prove his worth here yet so let’s see. Big summer ahead for the club; I hope he succeeds.

Especially by those who are adamant that selling Minteh and Anderson was a huge mistake, and that Amanda and co overspent and put us in this mess.

Like everyone else he'll be judged on his results, he's had more than enough time to get his feet under the table, assess the squad and check the books to find the budget. He's also had time to contact any agents, scout targets and liaise with Howe and anyone else who has a say in the process. If he doesn't deliver this summer then it'll be squarely on his shoulders, I think it'll be a good window personally and we'll spend wisely but the pressure is now on him. The team and management have delivered the best season for decades, it's now his turn to back it up

He's done nothing positive so far because we've had no money to spend and his first job was to fill a PSR-shaped hole left by his predecessors. Bit harsh using that as a stick to beat him with.

Saying he "took Howe on" seems a bit of a stretch? So does blaming that for our shaky start. Surely having spent most of the summer trying to flog anyone we could to avoid a points hit and multiple windows without first team additions were more likely to be the problem?

At times the stuff I read  on here.....

Already undertones of 'kill the Mitchell'

Just relax and let a bloke do his job quietly.

Listen, all is forgiven-onwards and upwards- but if he did his own job quietly then we wouldn’t have had the issues we had upon his arrival.

We sold Anderson and Minteh before end of June to meet the requirement. Subsequently Staveley left the management and Mitchell arrived, started the Guehi fiasco, and publicly stated that our previous transfers were not fit for purpose around end of August.

You guys forgot Eddies interview after the transfer deadline already?

The same policy that has gotten us 2 Champions League qualifications, a final and a trophy from starting in a relegation position? Or the same one that bought the player in Minteh that massively helped solve said PSR issues? Yes, imo.

If you dare to say your predecessor done a shit job, then obviously you should be able to do a better one eh?

And what happened last summer? All those quotes? Leaving Eddie just two centre back available for selection? Even Krafth was out at that time FFS.

We are just fucking lucky because Eddie done a blinder. You can just go back to read the post last August / September and see what’s the consensus here.

Yeah, it all worked out, and I'm happy, but he was right. It wasn't gonna last, just look at Villa.

Last summer was a nightmare, scrambling to fill that PSR gap. We shouldn't have to do that every summer, right? Villa was scrambling too, and they'll probably be scrambling again. It's just not sustainable.

I thought Kelly was a center back and was fit. Let's not make stuff up, mate. Surely you know if we bought Guehi, we'd need a big sale, right? That was also everyone's opinion here.

I think the “not fit for purpose” comment has been / is taken massively out of context (or maybe he just didn’t explain it very well).

There was nothing wrong with how we went about our transfer business after the takeover. Quite the opposite, it’s proved to be excellent and has allowed us to get where we’ve got.

But it needed to change. We couldn’t continue spending the way we spent, with very little coming in the other way. So in that sense it wasn’t “fit for purpose” to continue with that strategy.

That’s how I’ve interpreted what he meant anyway. But given the consternation it’s caused, he’d probably have been better off saying nowt.

Yeah, no way we could've kept going down that path.

Kelly and Krafth were on the bench against Southampton, and subbed in later.

Fair enough. But we offloaded two promising youngsters and couldn't spend for three transfer windows, yet the gamble worked out. Still, he wasn't wrong.

Couldn't or wouldn't?
