FIFA have pocketed 4 billion selling the broadcast rights already. How many people actually tune in surely doesn't effect them much? IMO there's been more controversial World Cups very recently that have attracted 5 billion viewers so whilst I respect taking a stance on an individual level I think it's very optimistic to expect a collective to be able to make a dent now. I think for most, people see sports/football as an escape and can easily overlook or not care about any of the politics around it. We are owned by one of the worst regimes to ever exist in history and it doesn't really effect my enjoyment of supporting Newcastle. it can affect FIFA for future sponsorships becasue of viewing metrics. It would hit FIFA indirectly through sponsorships, and challenging its legitimacy. It would not only depress ratings, but also get a lot of press about if it really is above politics (it obviously isn't). One World Cup wouldn't make much difference, but over a few, and you'll start to see the pressure on FIFA. Where it would probably hit more immediately is with broadcasters and the sponsors, which could result in smaller bids in the future. Spnnsors and broadcasters could also start demanding less controversial hosts. It may also force FIFA to punish rogue states like Israel if that's part of the demand in the targeted boycott. Vinny Green Balls
What about an alternative? A targeted boycott of the sponsors? And maybe some broadcasters? Punish them for advertising. But it wouldn't be a blanket boycott of every sponsor, which is not practical. Would anyone be into that?
Vinny Green Balls
My JVP friend just suggested that. It fits into the BDS structure quite well.
Begbie
I wont be traveling to US to watch the WC, I would have done it if the country wasnt so f*ed. I dont pay for TV, but I will see a few games that catch my interest.
Vinny Green Balls
We could do a 12-month shunning of four sponsors with the World Cup as the midpoint. For instance, don't sign up for visa. Find alternatives to Coca Cola. Don't buy Adidas products in that span. Also, we could shun regional broadcasters like Fox Sports in that period. A permanent boycott is impracitcal, and one during the World Cup is not long enough to be effective. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Haz
Surely even at this stage all the games could be moved to Canada and Mexico? Does Greenland have a pitch at all? It’s going to be nightmare getting into USA. Will they demand to see everyone’s phone to see if they’re saying nasty things about Trump? Will ICE agents be at every entry point? Then there’s the ethical thing. Would anyone feel content or safe to enter USA in its present guise, ruled by a capricious psychopath that creates lawless rules daily? His every fiat can be dangerous. Surel FIFA need to move otherwise there’ll be mayhem for visiting fans.

BlueStar
Sunderland fans won't watch presumably, seeing as they'd stop supporting their own club if the Saudis took over and got theminto the Champions League. Very strong moral compass. Hope some fans sing songs about Trump being a nonce when they play the US.

I saw some incredible mental gymnastics from that lot during the last one, a R&W mate said to me something like "If it's alright for the Saudis to own you it's alright for Qatar to host the World Cup and for us to watch it" or some old shite like that
TRC
In all honesty I think I’ll have football fatigue after this season. So much football
