I didn't enjoy nearly dying a couple of times, or coming within inches of getting kicked to fuck by a large group of Man Utd fans at Kings Cross (they played Chelsea that day) either, but...it was exhilarating as a young kid

The Fountain
Steve Foster wanting to kill Kenny Wharton when Kenny sat on the ball. 4-0 win Also played Luton the first game after the Hillsborough disaster. They took the Leazes and Gallowgate fences down mid week. 0-0 draw

I remember it most for my old man getting excited by Pop Robson - I’d never seen him that happy before at the match (tbf it was 88/89). It’s also still the only time I ever sat in the posh seats in the East Stand - the view of the ground from that angle and the noise was incredible to me. Not surprised, didn't go to that but it looked great fun and a parallel universe to the regular environment on the news the next day. I remember being in the bowels of the East Stand as the teams were being read out against Aston Villa in 89 and after Paul Sweeney was announced hearing people chant "Sweeney, Sweeney" and jumped to the conclusion 'he must be good if they're chanting his name'. Just being in the seats in those early days took some orientating for me, seemed so steep and unsafe, like you could easily fall right down them. Just not used to them. Sweeney was a bit of a cult hero in that we were shit and at least once in a game he'd put in a challenge, normally sliding, that was arrestable. jemo96
Some of my memories are.. Going to Zoots to see the strippers before the match. Getting tanked up on Broon & Exhibition The West Ham petrol bomb incident The Farmers Rest incident Beardsleys hatrick NYD against the mackems King Kevs testimonial game against Liverpool Beardsleys chip over Joe Corrigan Chris Waddle skinning Des Walker and firing in a screamer. The utter dross of Tony Cunningham & George Reilly Directors box invaded at the Den Millwall, scary day that was getting out of London. The 1987 FA cup match at Spurs and nearly getting crushed to death, was not long after Hillsborough. Listening to the news about Hillsborough on the coach coming back from Arsenal I think it was. The war cry of Indian Joe from the east stand every home game (who was he? 😆) We were Gallowgate corner lads often scoffing a shit burger from the little stand up top. Getting pissed on by beer monsters. loads I’ve probably forgotten also.
The Fountain
George Reilly rising like a phoenix from the flames to score the only goal against Liverpool at the Gallowgate in August 85. It was the first time I'd seen us beat Liverpool who were the dominant team all my footballing life at that stage.

ramirez
My first game was feb 89 v Liverpool, think I went to a few more the following season in division 2, including the beamback for the Boro game, probably wasn't too much of a difference from the 80's after italia 90 until maybe 92-3 when the premier league started and our ground was full every week and started to attract more kids etc.
jemo96
I actually missed the FA cup game between Whitley Bay and PNE at Hillheads despite living 15 minutes away. Can’t remember why but was told it was interesting day and night in Whitley Bay and surrounding areas.
