Quinn rescues fans again

Football fans tonight had a lucky escape when yobs hurled bricks through the windows of packed coaches bringing them home - and chairman Niall Quinn

stepped in again to help the red and white army return to Wearside safely.

After hearing that two buses travelling back from Southampton had been ambushed by thugs, who put one vehicle out of action sunderlandecho.com

understands Mr Quinn and team manager Roy Keane authorised the use of the players' luxury coach to get stranded supporters home.

Two Sunderland supporters' coaches came under attack as the fans travelled back home in buoyant mood after watching their heroes come from a goal down to beat promotion rivals Southampton 2-1 and top the Championship table for the first time this season.

Fortunately no-one was hurt in the ambush, which happened about a mile outside St Mary's Stadium at about 8pm tonight.

Police ordered that one of the buses, run by fanzine A Love Supreme, was not able to travel and fans faced the prospect of waiting hours for a new coach to travel down from the North East to bring them home.

But County Durham-based Classic Coaches heard about the attack and got permission from Sunderland AFC's management to get about 30 supporters home on the team's luxury bus.

The players and management are flying home from the South coast, and only needed the £300,000 coach to get them to and from Southampton airport.

Martin McFadden, editor of A Love Supreme said: "We're all grateful no-one was hurt and once again this is a magnificent gesture by the club and in this case Classic Coaches to make sure people get home."

Chairman Quinn endorsed his legendary status with the fans two weeks ago when he paid £8,000 out of his own pocket to get 80 people home after the Black Cats' win at Cardiff, when low-budget airline easyJet grounded a Bristol to Newcastle flight claiming boisterous followers posed a security risk - allegations the club vehemently denies.

Sunderlandecho.com understands Black Cats' fans were impeccably behaved, despite being goaded by their rivals' attack.

Hampshire Police are investigating and say a gang of local teenagers was responsible the attack.

The first time he bailed his drunken fans out of the shit was a nice gesture. I think the bloke is just desperate to be popular and is bending over backwards to a ridiculous extent to 'feather his own nest' for want of a better expression. This magnanimous gesture of offering an unused coach to shuttle his plebs back home will be somehow spun into SuperNiall 2: Lick my arse.

extending a simple courtesy to the folks whose support keeps the club going....the nerve of the bastard.

seriously, some of you guys are just too much.  you'll whinge endlessly about how our chairman is a self-important, money-grubbing t*** who could care less about the fans, and then you get on a chairman who makes a gesture to reward and encourage fan loyalty.

agree with this though:

It's a good gesture, but he would have been doing the human race a favour by leaving them stranded.

To be fair to Quinn it was anopther good gesture, the bare minimum you should expect as a fan of a club. Club looks after fans = fans lok after club. Simple equation, simple life!

Yeah that would piss the president of Iran off. Let the Hostages go or you're watching Sunderland for the rest of your days :D

You only can do good things when opportunities arise. What should he have done else? Act "normal" and let the fans get themselves out of the mess?

Unless Quinn and Keane weren't throwing bricks themselves, I can't see any problem with what they have done. Fair play to them...

I think it's actually quality what he's done. Respect to the man.

Maybe yesterday was, but the Cardiff incident was nothing more than him condoning football yobs who were frightening fellow passengers. Whatever spin Sundlund put on it, airlines (ESPECIALLY Easyjet) don't keep planes on the ground for fun.

Anyway how come the chairman always seems to be there at the time ?  Probably just a PR stunt to help the sad man's desperate desire for popularity.

Something is rotten about this....  The bus could have hit a tree, FFS.  There was probably enough room for the Scum in Niooollesss Disco Pants to travel back to the land where soap fails to exist.

Is he just making a rod for his own back. What if this happens again and he doesn't do anything about it the same fans arse licking him now will be calling him a good for nothing so and so if he doesn't help out next time.

All the same its a good thing he has done, even though he knows he'll get great publicity from it!
