IT'S not just a new manager that will be rolled out at St.James' Park this summer.

Following Tuesday's arrival of Sam Allardyce on Tyneside, the diggers moved in on the Gallowgate turf after a season which has seen 29 matches played out at the club's famous stadium.

The current pitch will be dug up and a new one relayed before Big Sam and his United team kick-off the Premiership campaign in August.

Eddie Rutherford, stadium manager, told nufc.co.uk: "We will be using the latest technology in pitch construction which is fibre elastic turf.

"It is soft for players to run on and reduces impact upon the joints.

"We have taken off the top 150mm and we will be laying 1,600 tonnes of fibre elastic turf. We hope that the pitch will be seeded within the next 10 days."

They could make it out of jelly and we'd still pick up injuries.

At least we'd finally "jell" as a team.

Its mixed in with the real turf, dont think its the same as they installed at the training ground previously that was said to be causing the hamstring injuries, but a new type. Mixed turf has been around in the EPL with a few clubs for a season or two.

That's what Arsenal have got, Chelsea as well.

Liverpool and Spurs have got the plastic mesh which has to be injected into the soil and that only needs to be relaid every 3 or 4 years.  Hampden and Wembley have also got the mesh version.

Well we can't really doubt it if Arsenal have it. Best pitch in the league for years now.
