Todays Chronic...

http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcastleunited/chroniclesport/tm_headline=united-back-in-for-czech-star%26method=full%26objectid=19320802%26siteid=50081-name_page.html

Newcastle United have increased their offer to Paris St Germain for the Czech international David Rozehnal, as Sam Allardyce steps up his search for a much-needed new central defender.

The Chronicle reported last Wednesday that United had bid £2m for the 26-year-old defender, but this has since been turned down by the French outfit.

And after losing his former Bolton Wanderers central defender Tal Ben Haim to Chelsea, Allardyce has gone back to Paris St Germain with an increased offer, believed to be between £2.5m and £3m.

The ball is now back in the court of Paris St Germain, and I understand that Allardyce will refuse to go any higher - and there is every prospect of a battle of wits between the two clubs.

snip...

There seems a fair enough chance that Rozehnal will end up at St James' Park, and if he does this does not mean that United will lose interest in Liverpool's Sami Hyypia.

The Finnish international is now 33 and obviously in the twilight of his career, but it is his experience which Allardyce feels would be so valuable.

Not even that. It's not in the online editions of the local Dortmund newspapers. There is also a huge forum just dealing with transfer rumours (www.transfermarkt.de) where normally people post all kind of news from the papers. Today they are just talking about the Daily Mail rumour.

That's natural. The German media will tell their people Rozehnal will go there, the British press will link him here, while the French press will link him here for a while before finally surrendering and agreeing that he's going to Germany too.

The local news in Dortmund are now apparently carrying the story that a move to Dortmund has been rejected with the club not being able to agree a fee with PSG (last offer thought to be 3.6m Euro).

Rozenhal looks quite skinny for a CB. Would imagine we'll need a more experienced bigger CB alongside as Taylor, good though he is, is still a bit raw.

Well judging by Gooch and Bramble's performances I would say it's about time we gave the skinny guys a chance wouldn't you?

So Dortmund dropped their interest, therefore Rozehnal's arrival is just matter of time.

Newcastle have upped their offer for Paris St Germain's David Rozehnal as they compete with Borussia Dortmund for the 26-year-old defender's signature.

The Magpies initially had a £2m bid rejected for the Czech international, while the German club are believed to have tabled £2.7m.

PSG chairman Alain Cayzac has hinted that Dortmund had edged ahead of the English club in the race of Rozehnal.

Newcastle are now waiting for PSG's response to their latest offer.

Rozehnal began his career in his home country with Sigma Olomouc and twice won the Belgian title with Bruges before his move to PSG in 2005.

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is keen to bring in central defenders after releasing Titus Bramble, Craig Moore, Oguchi Onyewu as well as left-back Olivier Bernard.

He tried to sign ex-Bolton centre-back Tal Ben Haim but missed out as the Israel international opted to join Chelsea.

Allardyce has also been linked with a move for 33-year-old Liverpool stalwart Sami Hyypia and Marseille skipper Habib Beye.

Hyypia made 29 appearances for the Reds last season but has seen Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger establish themselves as Liverpool's first-choice centre-back partnership.

Most boring transfer of the summer so far, and that's not just for us.

Average player no on has ever heard of, low fee, only two clubs in for him, neither sets of fans are arsed about the transfer, no direct quotes from the player or NUFC, just yo-yo comments from the French & German camps.
