Pretty sure Barzagli was linked to us, Spurs and someone else... Rangers maybe, at the start of the transfer window for about £5/6m with quotes from his agent. It was on the BBC.

£11m is ridiculous

You seen him play much at all?

Not having a go, just would like the opinion of someone who's seen him play a bit.

I note its Lee Ryder who keeps coming out with these gossipy rumours. Alan Oliver seems to steer well clear of them. I'm not his biggest fan but when Oliver writes about a transfer target he's generally on the ball. This Ryder just makes it up to fill the long summer days, i'm sure.

after a while it gets a bit tedeous hearing about loads of empty rumours, there may be some milege in this one but if so i'd rather here about it when we've agreed fee's and are signing contracts.

This being the same Alan Oliver who was the only journalist on the planet thinking we were after Ronaldinho and prepared to offer Robert & Bernard as part-exchange.

Tbh, its one of the reasons i dont post much on here in the summer. Its mainly a load of "we're signing player x, oh no we're not, yes we are cos The Sun said it." Yawn.

I hear that boo boo, most the time i get frustrated cus of the expectation and then nothing.Personally i think we we sign a few more quality players but whether they are the ones being mentioned who knows?

Hopefully the talk stops and the signing begins(by the way, well done sam so far)

Its that mental toture thing some people seem to kinda like though. Each to there own, easy to see why you steer clear. Its easy to go mad.

Personally I enjoy the speculation part to a point, yet cant stop myself from looking even though im fed up to the teeth of it.

well it's the same with me to a degree, i kinda buy into alot of the hype at times, no out of naivity but pure hope.

we have waited so long for a good manager, good board and good team im sure the anxiouty spreads throughout the toon army.

Would love a player of Barzagli's calibre to play for Newcastle.

You don't have to watch a player gazillion times to see if it's a class player or not.

Barzagli is just the type of player we need right now, and it sends a message to everyone that we have real ambitions even this season if we got him.

Who does he share similar attributes with?

Woody?

Ferdinand?

Terry?

Carragher?

I know he played against us but I don't remember any individual performances that stood out from their lot.

From what i have seen om him i would say Woody, well i have not seen him much tbh and i cant remember to say for sure. But he can take the ball forward from the backfour, maybe not as well as Rio but still better than carragher to name on.

He's not the quickest either but positionally he's good as many other italian defenders just like Woody was.

But i could be wrong...

Unbelievable how people are dismissing the guy before they've seen him play, as it happens I have. Barzagli shares all the attributes of your competent Italian defender. Very calm and collected, decent in the air and very comfortable on the ball. In terms of price he'd have to be rated in the seven to nine million pounds bracket, but with the current inflation in the market there's no suprise to see Palermo slapping such a price tag on him.

This is probably your run in the mill rumor manufactured by a desperate column filler and it seems we can't wait to pour over the latest bits of information we find. It confuses me though to see people judging the price tag of players before they've seen them play. If we are in fact chasing this particular player doesn't it make sense to put a bit of faith in our manager and judge Barzagli when or more likely if he pulls on the black and white shirt for several games. It's not just this guy either people complaining with being linked with players such as Fanni when we seem to know little about them.

Personally I can't see us making the move for Barzagli. Although he has the attributes to succeed in the premier league I can't see the Sam moving for him. So far he's been very shrewd in the transfer market and splashing such a significant amount of money on a foreign player who will need time to adjust to the fast pace of the league seems pretty unlikely.

Regarding the price people have got to remember how TV rights, sponsorships, etc has encouraged inflation in the current market. Notably Nugent worth maybe three to four million pounds sold for seven million pounds, Chopra sold for five million pounds when he's probably worth two to three million pounds and Reo-Coker worth about five million pounds moving for eight and a half million pounds. Although these players are young and English prices are on the up everywhere. These days if you want real quality you have to be willing to pay an extra two to three million pounds or so.

Or not. The asking price for Heinze is supposed to be £5M.

The way things are going you'd be better off buying rejects from Man Utd and Chelsea than Championship prospects.  They buy good players at prices above their worth and turn around and sell them at cut rates.

Man United seem pretty reluctant to let Heinze go, so I'd be surprised if he departs for such a low price. He's far superior to the likes of Baines who are being touted in the five million pounds bracket.

Regarding your second point not necessarily, it depends on the player. For example if Chelsea were to ever let go of Bridge he'd no doubt be cheaper than the prospect Bale, but you've also got to remember Ashton was bought by Norwich for six million pounds. Ashton has far superior ability to say someone like Crouch who would go for well over ten million pounds, so I'd say it depends on the individual circumstances of each player.

He's a top quality defender.

Has been touted the 'next Cannavaro' for quite some time now. He is cool, calm and collected. Doesn't panic, and most importantly doesn't get beaten easily.

I'd just about pay the 11m for him, he's that good. Also the perfect age for a defender, 26-30 are the years they are at their best, and he's only just turned 26.

Sign him up.
