- Viduka: a "stop gap" striker, only will do the job for the next 2-3 years (like Duncan Ferguson, he came in, he did the job, but that's it)

- Smith: will do better in the attacking midfielder position. In forward position, less effective, less goals

- Ameobi: not sure he will be up to the "main striker" job. Probably only good as the backup striker

 

Only leave us with Martins. So for me, just keep Michael Owen. If he is fully fit and fully committed to NUFC (remove the clause etc), he can do the job for us (hopefully) until he is 35, just like Alan Shearer

Have to admit that was my first response to the latest delay - it helps that we're pretty well covered up front, and as others have pointed out he doesn't really fit into Sam's preferred formation anyway.

Owen's finishing ability will probably win us some vital points this season. If we aren't desperate for cash - and the Dyer saga would seem to suggest we aren't - then why get rid of Owen now he's over his serious injuries, touch wood? He should be back within a week or so, and he'll strengthen the team IMO.

Sam Allardyce will allow Michael Owen to play for England if he is fit by next week.

 

Owen has been ruled out of Newcastle's Premier League opener against Bolton on Saturday with a thigh problem but could face Germany on 22nd August.

 

The striker could use the friendly to help him regain match fitness having played just 45 minutes in pre-season.

 

Allardyce believes Owen would benefit from featuring for England as part of his return to full fitness and is open to the idea of him playing for Steve McClaren's men.

 

"Michael would, at the very earliest be fit at the beginning of next week, but not fit enough to play first-team football without a couple of games behind closed doors or in the reserves," Allardyce said in The Daily Telegraph.

 

"It (the Germany game) could be a good thing for us if he is fit by the end of next week, plays a reserve game and gets involved in a game with us and then gets another game for England under his belt.

 

"It would be better doing it that way if it helps, so an extra game for him is all we need."
