Are you for real? Villa put too much trust in O'Neill. O'Neill's idea of a transfer policy is that you have no scouting network (genuinely, that's not an exaggeration, we didn't have any), and that you buy only from the home market. He bought 30 odd players at Villa. The number who weren't playing already in the UK? Two. And one of those only happened because Lyon got on the blower and offered him to us. MON will only work somewhere where he's the undisputed power - on and off the pitch. That's why Quinn has been shunted away. At Villa, MON worked with three chief executives - Richard FitzGerald, Michael Cunnah and Paul Faulkner. The first two left because they found MON impossible to work with. the final one was the one who told him he had to do something about the wage bill. He refused, hoping he'd win again, only not to, as he was up against one of Lerner's closest advisors. So what did he do? He threw his toys out of the pram and left, *five days* before the start of the season. That screwed up last season for us, and if you want an indicator of where his f***ing shameful transfer policy left us, look at the logic in buying an enitre defence in 2008-09 (Friedel. Shorey. Curtis Davies, Cuellar, Luke Young - who he could have had for 2m the year before, but waited and paid 5m for) then, deciding he didn't rate them almost immediately, going out the next season and buying ANOTHER entire defence (Beye, Warnock, Collins, Dunne). You can point at Ashley Young and say he was a good signing (he was), and Milner was superb for us, but as he'd already spent a year with us before, that one was hardly earth shattering in terms of him scouting out a gem. When he left, he left us with a wage bill that was 88% of our turnover, and at that point I think we had the sixth or seventh highest turnover in the league - so go figure that one out. That's why we've had Habib Beye here for three whole years, now aged 35, picking up 40k a week. Thats why we bought Curtis Davies for 10 million pounds - think about it, ten million pounds - only to see him fail and be moved on to Blues for a pittance. That's also why we're paying Emile f***ing Heskey 65,000 a week until he's 35, too. You can kid yourself about "oh, it'l be different this time" but it will not be. When he left Celtic, they had the same problems. They were paying Bobo Balde the best part of 40k a week. In the SPL. Think about it. I note also that you're needing to buy strikers this summer. Well, good luck for that. I remember us clamouring for a reliable scorer to get us into the top four. Martin went out and bought Harewood, then Heskey. At the time Darren Bent went to Sunderland for a measley £10m. He'll almost certainly sign Kevin Doyle for you, and you'll have misgivings and convince yourself it's about what he does in a Sunderland shirt that matters, but good f***ing luck with that, because O'Neill couldn't pick a striker to save his life. Painful dose of reality there for Paxton.

I actually think we'd do well if we took it seriously.

If Scholes is still playing next season we won't get a point off Man Utd . I wish he would retire.

SCHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *GASP* OOOOOOOOOOOOLES

Hey we got 4 points off them

Rooney's hair transplant seems to be falling out. Well worth all the money.

min. 2 play off games if we come 5th and got knocked out. Cup place goes straight into the groups (min. 6 games) but I imagine they'd swap that and the 5th if it got the place got transferred to league. 5th only get you into the qualifier? I thought it meant outright qualification. Bah. Every one has to play in the play off round before the group stages. It's normally against part time farmers. No they don't - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_UEFA_Europa_League#Group_stage (unless this is wrong) Didn't know that. That's complete bullshit that the FA Cup winners (runners up really) get in the group stages but 5th place have to go through a play off.

With the solidity and effectiveness we've got from some of our fringe players this season, you'd think people would learn. Joker. I knew you'd say that since I put Best on there. Best has started for the 5th or 6th best team in the league just about every time he's been fit, and was a key reason we were 3rd after 12 games or whatever. Would I start him when everyone is fit? Of course not. But he's proven himself to be a very capable squad player, and to sack him off for peanuts makes no sense whatsoever unless you've got something personal against the lad, which you obviously have. Guthrie away on a free - Why? What purpose does this serve? Simpson away for peanuts too despite being at worst an OK squad player with a questionable attitude? Smith's irrelevant because he's essentially no longer an Newcastle player who will cease being an employee by June. Just seems you want the players out that you personally don't like. Football doesn't work like that. We need 2 players for every position at a minimum. No I like Guthrie. I just think that he and Simpson will go because of their contract situations.
-
We may not have a choice with Guthrie or Simpson. If we can't get them to sign new contracts they will go which is why I put them on the list.

http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/newcastle-united/nufc-news/2012/04/08/pardew-recruits-required-for-european-campaign-79310-30716617/ The second article is what I like to hear personally. We need a bigger squad that's been obvious for a while.
-
Why is Douglas free? Why only 2-3m for Pieters? Why are we selling Best? Because Douglas' contract ends in the summer, 2-3m is about Pieters value (you can bump it up a bit if you want) and I get the impression that Pardew doesn't really rate Best so I think he'll be sold.
-
On the assumption that we don't sell any major players then I'd guess there will be about £10m net to spend and we'll raise a bit extra by selling some fringe players. I'd like to see: In: Douglas Texeira (Free-ish?) Erik Pieters (£2-3m) Mohammed Diame (Free) Junior Hoilett (£2m tribunal?) Gylfi Sigurdsson (£5-7m?) Out: Guthrie (Free) Leon Best (£1-2m) Danny Simpson (£2m) Alan Smith (Free but his grotesque wages off the books) Obviously I think we'd still need another striker and a back up goalkeeper (as our goalkeeping options are crap beyond Krul). If someone like Tiote is sold for silly money then we could get a few more players like Debuchy perhaps.
-
It's only worthwhile if we expand the squad. Our players have got a lot of niggling injuries this season just playing league games.
-
I love that 'Sunderland would be 3rd if the league had started when MON took over' stat. Guess who's above them in that league

He always seems to want to score a worldy - the thing is his run to byline and cut in will work at some point - He needs to use his brain a bit more and be less selfish as no doubt he provides them and Cisse or Ba will score them Been watching ssn to f***ing much haven't I. Only gone and done it If you're emulating Paul Merson you need to re-evaluate your life
-
I can't wait. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1301712/Buy-buy-Martin-How-ONeill-spent-120million-years-Aston-Villa.html If it gets us 3 consecutive 6th places finishes, great cup runs and also European football then I'll take it. Even if it set you back 10 years ala Villa right now?? Not to mention the fact he never once took European games seriously.

For what it's worth they look shit. If Cisse, Ba and Ben Arfa maintain their form we'll beat them.
