There's a lot of negativity around Shelvey from the forum and the fanbase but one thing that has never been in question IMO is his ability. If Howe can motivate him and fit him into the team in a way that maximises his strengths and mitigates his lack of workrate, he can still be a huge asset.

Slot a proper #10 into that formation (Coutinho?) in place of Joelinton and that starts to look half decent. Or alternatively move Willock into the #10 and fill his CM slot with someone who can run a game. We seriously lack depth though. One injury and we're bringing the championship dross back into the side.

Tripper would be a great signing but for the money i'd prefer Lamptey - he seems to be very much the Howe type of fullback as well.

This whole 'filled first' concept is baffling. If the board plan to bring in CB, CM, LB, RB, striker, it doesn't matter what order they're signed in. Just because you sign a striker doesn't mean you're not going to follow that up with 2 CMs

If Howe comes in we won't go for Dele Ali - he's a notoriously bad trainer and Howe demands intensity and application.

Loan with an option to buy for Coutinho and the talk around new signings is that we're looking for players coming to the end of their contracts, which limits the financial risk anyway.
