  1. It's not common but yeah, it happens more than anyone hears about. It happens to people of all ages, sizes, shapes and backgrounds.
  2. Cat, if that's the case, is it a bad thing for his long-term chances that his condition hasn't improved/he isn't stable after so many hours? I know no one knows specifics, but.. As Mick has said - no, it's not really an immediate concern. The fact that he hasn't actually died is the crucial thing at this point. We don't know whether he's even regained consciousness but I would strongly suspect that he's in a medically induced coma at the mo which is standard, and therefore still critical, but critically stable if that makes sense.
  3. For those looking for an update this morning - there's been no further comment overnight which would suggest he remains in a critical condition.
  4. Most heart attacks aren't fatal. As she was seen to quickly, it's more than likely she's fine. She? And it was more a cardiac arrest than a heart attack, which is pretty fatal in many circumstances. I was talking about the old girl on the bus. Seems like he deleted his post? On the CPR topic: It's only got a very slim chance of being successful. Apologies, I should have read the post you quoted.

  6. They're so easy to use that you simply place them in the right place and keep hold of them. They detect the heart rhythm and will recognise when to administer the 'shock' by themselves. They'll only work if the heart is behaving in a certain way and they do 99% of the work. Ooo, hello. I should have read this first! Did I teach you that? I just thought that was you on his account. I'm at work, he's at home. Anyway... Have a read of this www.aedlocator.org/faq.php

  8. Defibs are already routinely available in public places but most people don't know about them. They're in the malls of the Metrocentre and Eldon Square, and in places like leisure centres. They're also totally user-friendly and speak instructions to the user. They won't administer a shock unless it has analysed a heart rhythm that is 'shockable' (not all arrest rhythms are) More people need to know but then how do you teach it to the wider public without major advertising or funding. It's a real shame.
  9. They provide stewards with basic first aid during your training, but it's rarely tested. I just used 'at the match' as an example. I really meant 'in day-to-day life' Why don't we teach it to kids in school? (obviously older kids) They might go through their whole lives and never use it but one day...who knows?
  10. This has also made me wonder how many people know how to do basic life support. If this had happened to someone in the stand next to you at the match, would you be able to do anything until medics got there? I know that lots of workplaces offer voluntary BLS training but how well are they attended?
  11. It's more likely that he suffers from an undiagnosed heart condition such as cardiomyopathy. Unfortunately it's something that can have no symptoms in young people and can lead to sudden arrhythmias/arrest.
  12. He won't have been starved of oxygen for long at all - the paramedics started CPR within minutes and will have administered oxygen immediately. Unfortunately any speculation at this point is futile. If he's on life support it may have been enforced in order to rest his body and assess his neurological status. He may be on inatropes which are basically drugs that maintain the BP and 'make' the heart work. The information given in the statement isn't at all detailed and it's impossible to say what his 'chances' are - even for the next 24hrs. My gut feeling is that they'll be monitoring him by the minute overnight, and may know more in the morning. Should he have any further cardiac episodes then I'm sure everyone knows that is the worst case scenario. In hospital-speak 'critical' is never good. There'll be an amazing intensive care team caring for him overnight and all we can do is hope and pray.
  13. God bless him, such a relief for now and we can only pray he recovers. I can't stress enough how slim the chances of survival are if you need CPR outside of a hospital setting. Those paramedics truly saved a mans life today. I'm ridiculously proud to be part of the medical profession.
  14. Yes, apparently he was smirking, laughing and trying to chat to other players during it.
  15. I don't. Money is irrelevant today - it's from all of us.
  16. It was really sweet cos it's a tiny little flower shop in Houghton (not many of us Geordies round there) and it's always open dead early when I coming from nightshift in a morning. I went in and had a look but the only wreaths were Christmas ones for front doors etc. When I explained what I wanted the lady who owned the shop was fab. She's a Newcastle fan too and it was her that suggested she make the black and white ribbons and found me the football boots card
  17. The least I can do. Really struggled to know what to write cos there's so much we could say but hope that's alright. Midds has just left so they'll be up there at SJP very soon

  19. Okay, managed to sort something - I thought a wreath was a bit morbid so have got nice flowers with a personal nufc touch (will post pics in a bit) What's the general consensus re. the message? I thought it might be nice to make it out to his wife and sons and then hopefully the club will keep the cards from the tributes and pass them on in a couple of weeks time. What does everyone think?
  20. Oh and the tribute documentary is repeated on BBC1 Wales tomorrow at 5.30pm for anyone that missed it.
  21. I have to go past a nice little florist which is normally open early on my way home from work in the morning. I could get something and midds could take it to the match?
