I'm no fan of Smith but the best thing about him in comparison to Butt is that Smith now knows his limitations whereas Butt sees himself as some sort of Andrea Pirlo character so he doesn't just give the ball to someone else having won it, he tries to play clever passes which inevitably result in him hoofing it out of touch. Why the cunting hell is he taking free kicks when Danny Guthrie is on the field? Guthrie's not perfect - see him pelting a free kick out of play after five minutes but he's the league's leading creator, set up another one today and with Ryan Taylor totally out in the cold (wrongly imo), Guthrie should be taking all the set pieces.

Nicky Butt didn't really get man of the match?

Second half was absolutely diabolical, our inability to hold onto the ball just invites pressure time and time again. The forward partnership is shocking and i don't think we'll miss harewood. Nicky butt can fuck off, he is fucking shite. And god knows why guthrie was shunted wide left. Hughton got it badly wrong today.

Felt a bit sorry for Lita by the end, he got absolutely humiliated.

That's bollocks about that Charlton game, i drove from Hartlepool and the central motorway was like an ice rink. Calling it off half an hour before kick off was laughable though.

I'll be devastated if the game's off. Hope it goes ahead and we win when one of their mob slips on an icy blade of grass. I still want revenge for Jeff Wintergate.

i've been saying that for 18months. my problem is that only butt gets slagged off fot it. i honestly fail to see what either adds to the team. Alan Smith's not been slagged off within the last 18 months?

Just managed to get online, fucking astonished that Nicky Butt is playing. Absolutely gobsmacked.

Harper's save yesterday was tremendous but only had to make it because of his initial hesitance to come for a ball that should have been his. Bit of a rick but he redeemed himself and has been superb all season.

I think probably Carroll was the one who gave him the ball. Pancrate made the goal on his own though. EDIT: ah Jonas.

Butt did his best to keep them in it with his ability to give the ball away. That spell at the Leazes End near the final whistle when 3 of our players had a go at just keeping the ball, then Butt came over and chipped it out of play summed him up nicely. Yep I thought it was a terrible substitution to make. When under the cosh the last thing you need is someone who gives back possession every single time, regardless of how many times he wins it back (not very often these days).

Didn't think we'd hold out with half an hour left when Butt had come on and we'd stopped making any attempts at going forward. Watford missed lots of good chances at that stage and we were camped in our area. Pancrate really changed the game in our favour again at that point and we were back on top by the time he put the game to bed.

Clearly not match fit yet but still looks far too good for this league on the evidence so far. Has what too many of our players lack, end product. A goal of sheer quality rarely seen at SJP these days.
