  1. All your point are a bit shit really. Good luck with the thread.
  2. At our level there never will be the perfect appointment i'm afraid. You (not you specifically) just have to consider the overall picture, and that is Houllier is a good manager, and with Shearer alongside him it would make a smashing team. Even Lippi, Van Gaal, Mourinho have their faults, no one is perfect. as i say he'd be a very good choice, but i wouldn't just automatically give him the job without interviewing him or seriously looking at other candidates too. don't think a shearer combo would work tho, bobyule has outlined why in some other posts. I'd give him it on his own, Shearer coming in as no2 is the icing on the cake for me. I think Bobyule is being over cautious, he's looking at all the negatives. Shearer won't hang over Houllier, it won't be about getting Houllier out when its going wrong as Shearer is there and its his mess as well. i think it would just be another complication and another way to pile the pressure on. as a working relationship i think they'd get on fine (if shearer is prepared to be number 2) but at the first sign of trouble, or even at the first press conference, there'd be uncomfortable questions asked and s*** stirred up. people said shearer had too much power as a player so appointing him simply for his name to the coaching staff might undermine the manager. who would have more authority amongst the fans or even players for instance? Again these are the negatives. If its to be believed Shearer doesn't want to work with KK, probably for those reasons, i reckon Shearer could possibly think (just as i do) that KK can't offer enough as he's seen what he's capable of at club and NT level. As for Houllier its different. Shearer (if believed) likes the idea, and of course Shearer knows an experienced man like Houllier is going to ahead of him and could accept that. Shearer himself doesn't think he is ready for the job, last thing he's going to do is get above his station early on in this arrangement. Shearer will command respect from the players and fans, but Houllier obviously commands respect from Shearer or Shearer wouldn't work with him, along side him, or below him, which ever way its going to pan out. Shearer has as far as I can see not made any major career decisions without fully thinking it out through, him to Soton, to Blackburn and even turning down Manu for us. I can't see him changing his habits just because its the toon coming asking, if anything he'd probably not even consider the job (manager or assistant) unless he'd made sure everything was in place before he'd accept. Houllier would i'd sure, tick all the boxes for Shearer. Spot on. He's not impulsive, if he were he's have stayed on under Roeder and waited for the job then.

  7. and all the trophies. look at the mess we were in when he took over, Houllier was exactly what we needed at the time. and the s*** you say he bought won the European Cup. all bar Alonso and Garcia who started the final were Houlliers players. give Houllier time and he'll be brilliant for you. You a Liverpool fan? yes. word is from one of the lads i know who works with Houllier in some sort of agent public speaking capacity says that talks are at an advanced stage and Houllier is very interested, and your lot seem to be keen. not a done deal yet, but its looking more likely than not at the minute. no word on assistant though, but Houllier came very close to signng Shearer in his last season in charge, and has a lot of time for him. apparantly Shearer came very close to signing for us in 2002, but changed his mind at the last minute Its been my preferred combination since last year (well December ), i'm all for it, i'd be delighted if it comes true.
  8. So did Dogleash, Souness and Robson. And Allardyce, Roeder & Keegan didn't (minor not inc) haven't, and probably will never do so.
  9. and all the trophies. look at the mess we were in when he took over, Houllier was exactly what we needed at the time. and the shit you say he bought won the European Cup. all bar Alonso and Garcia who started the final were Houlliers players. give Houllier time and he'll be brilliant for you. 10. If people have a problem with his signings and at best they think he's average in the transfer market, then what does that make what he achieved with these wasters, expensive flops and shit players? Phenomenal?
  11. When Houllier came in at Liverpool it was a total mess. He sorted it out with signings. Here are the spends of him and Rafa: In 3 and a half years Rafael Benítez bought 45 players for £126,296,000 Rafael Benítez sold 47 players for £63,375,000 Net spend 63 million In 5 years Gerard Houllier bought 40 players for £125,400,000 Gerard Houllier sold 48 players for £60,675,000 net spend 65 million So he spent £65m net to win 6 trophies, £65m from a team which was bog standard ordinary, very poor compared to a Liverpool standard, while Rafa's spent the same but with a trophy winning team with trophy winning players, got nowhere closer to the title, and fluked one CL and was handed an FA cup. You can knock Houlliers spending but i hope he net spends £65m and wins up one trophy nevermind 6.
  12. Only reason he pulled out of Bowyer deal was because Bowyer made it clear he wasn't interested. All the Pool fans i know both at the time and now would say they wanted to keep anelka Agreed, Smicer played well in the final, still think overall he wasn't exactly a top signing though. As we won't be in any CL finals any time soon i'd suggest we are better off looking for players who perform a tad more consistently I take your point on Cisse, he did look like he would be awesome Pongolle is NOT awesome, not by any stretch. Failed at Liverpool, failed at Blackburn Cheyrou was let go for free... £4.5m loss 3 good signings, one of which they stole off us... Not really the best record for about 5 years in charge?! Pongolle is class in Spain, and was instrumental in a very important win against Betis in the CL IIRC they year the won it. Some spanish team im sure. Aye your right about Cheyrou. But there's also Dudek, Riise, Babbel, Ziege, Baros (sold at twice the price) plus many more. The CL winning team was mainly his. It dsoesn't matter if someone else was in charge of it because were only currently talking about his signings right now, and his signings won the Champions League.
  13. Currently 6th best manager in the world, Alex Ferguson 7th in the IFFHS rankings. Houllier 5th
  14. Anelka was average when at Liverpool, i wouldn't of paid £13m for him either. He said no at the last minute to a £9m Bowyer as he felt there was something wrong with him. Smicer help win Liverpool the CL likes so many of Houlliers signings, i think that goal was worth the money. Cisse he never got to play, at the time Cisse was shit hot, Rafa and injuries ruined that one. Pongolle is a great player, made a profit IIRC. Taore, Cheyrou were sold at a minimal loss. Lost the lot on Diao though. Good signings: Henchoz Hyypia Hamman Heskey All i can think of right now without doing a google.
  15. He was technically no2 under Roeder before he retired.
  16. With all the work he put in helping develop Clairefontaine I think Houllier would be perfect for the criteria the club have set. I can see him running the club and Shearer taking charge on the training ground everyday, that's if they work together that is. But what about the style of play?! Did you guys not watch Houllier's Liverpool team?! Houllier's Lyon looked brilliant though. no. Le Guen's Lyon looked brilliant and Houllier inherited that. With the heart and engine room sold don't forget. Essien & Diarra were taken away and Houllier did just as well as Le Guen.
  17. This is what I'm hearing, but that its going to be more of a case of Shearer/Houllier. With those two, surely they'd have a bust up within six months and things would go to hell again. Why would there be? Houllier would take this job in the knowledge he's a babysitter, he's looking after and watching out for Shearer who will one day become manager, neither are going to forget that, and as long as they don't neither will step on each others toes. Its healthy to have their own opinions, its why this will work well imo.
  18. Very. It sounds like they know what they want, i think they are close and this is just something to let the fans know that they want to keep in communication with us during the process instead of getting all our info from the media. Indeed. Otherwise why release this now? The criteria is all agreeable, though we need to be careful not to appoint someone who will simply conform to it and be afraid to try new ideas in their own style. People have got reservations about the football GH would play. Its eased for me slightly when you think what Liverpool's ethos was at the time, winning games was imperative as they tried to catch up Manu. Then winning trophies became paramount and no one was complaining then. When it became a problem was when he fell ill and Thompson took over. They went all out defence, do it for Houllier, and played some of the most boring stuff going. When he came back the mentality was difficult to break, i'm sure he tried a few times to break out, but it ended up kicking him in the teeth, when he did the team would concede, so he stayed defensive. It became catch-22. I really don't think the image painted on him was indeed fair, or all his doing. If given the job here, and told to attack, like at Lyon, then i think that's what he'd happily do, but being able to defend while doing that job. With Shearer alongside him and the Ashley pressure on attacking stylish football, i think he'd have a great time once the messy stuff (this season) is out of the way. I think direction from the board is a must in some ways, a distinct direction that they will stick too, not a scatter gun approach like previous.
