In all honesty if £14 million was on the table, and if that £14 million is spent on bringing players in this window... -

can you explain the history of the term, as you appear to know...genuine interest Look at the wikipedia article. The phrase was first used in a Simpson's episode. It was used by some on the right to discredit anyone questioning the rush to war.
-
Oh, FFS. The "surrender monkeys" thing is a joke. It is a parody of bigotry. The fact that some on the right embraced the phrase and used it in earnest just shows what a bunch of clowns those people are.

I don't mind the disagreements. The only thing that really gets me is how disagreeing with someone's point instantly transforms you (in their eyes) into an blind apologist for Souness, or Roeder, or Allardyce or whomever. There is certainly more than enough blame to go around and few unmitigated successes in recent club history. I don't think anyone on here is so stubborn or oblivious as to claim otherwise.
-
Huh? Compared to Souness he looks like a f***ing mastermind. Well, I'll give you Smith and Rozehnal. And Barton, I guess (though I still think he can come through). Viduka, Cacapa, and Geremi were free. Wouldn't call Enrique an epic failure. Beye and Faye were damn good. 13.5 million on utter, unmitigated failures. 6 million more on a fullback that struggled to get into the team at the time. That's epic enough for me. 21 years old and an epic failure. BS.

Would an Abramovich count as a miracle? The dominoes would have to fall in reverse order. The club probably needs someone from the North East. Don't think a billionaire Russian, Thai, Arab, American is going to do it. Some previously unnoticed Newcastle supporting billionaire? Whilst the club would probably benefit from a new owner coming in & wiping the slate clean the idea of a Geordie Abramovich is fanciful. The club has been up for sale since September but he hasn't appeared yet, prior to that the Hall family were apparently willing to sell their share for about 3 years before Ashley bought them out and yet the Geordie Abramovich didn't appear then. What about a consortium of local businessmen/women? We'd need to find a group of people locally willing to invest a minimum of £250m. That's going to be a decent sized group of people & you'd then be left with all the other issues; once the club has been bought who is going to dip into their pockets again to buy some more players? who is going to be responsible for the day-to-day running of the club? what happens if one or more of the investors suddenly decide they want their money back? Foreign investors? Arab billionaires, etc.? They'll have no greater feeling for the club or city than Ashley and there's no guarantee that they'll want a Man City style plaything instead of trying to make some money from us. New ownership would be nice, but it's completely unrealistic at this moment. Well that would count as a miracle then wouldn't it.
-
Apart from the fact that even Ashley wants to watch entertaining football. I'm not convinced. You need good players for that. And he was sitting up in the stands with the name "Smith" on the back of his shirt.

More maddening, for me, was Allardyce buying Enrique and then wasting N'Zogbia at left back. Criticisms of Jose Enrique's passing aside, he is by far our best option back there.

Funny how we still got into the Champions League, ey? Not as if Souness didn't have the funds to improve them. No, what he did was use the funds to fuck up the defense even more! Complete non-argument. I honestly have no idea how anyone can be in this idiots corner. Ever. Souness did fuck up. But selling Woodgate out from underneath SBR without giving him the opportunity to buy a replacement fucked up that season. The club was shit without Woodgate the previous season. And they were shit without him. Boumsong and even Babayaro were *improvements* over what he had. Bernard was obviously not the same player. (They were still shit). Boumsong had a lot admirers on these boards that first half season-- some even calling him captain material ifrcc. Not in Souness's corner at all. He wasted the funds he was given. He dismantled the club and fucked up it all up so badly he made Roeder look good. That said, I never thought for a moment that we might actually get relegated.

Kinnear inherited a far superior backline than had Souness. Carr - O'Brien - Bramble - Bernard. God that was bad. But gawd he bought a load of shit.

Piss off. I'll take that back, jesus wept. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/match_of_the_day/7802128.stm Jesus did indeed weep. Oba Martins is our only really important player. We're shit without him. Don't pose a threat to anyone. -
Team: Newcastle United Current Position: 12th Where did you expect your team to currently be: Top six. Best player so far this season: Given, Bassong, Jonas. Martins is still our most important asset. Worst player so far this season: No complaints really. We need to improve on Butt, Duff/N'Zogbia, but the really poor players are not starting. That's a nice change from the past few seasons. Best game so far: Manchester United away Worst game so far: Stoke City home Who would you like to sign in January: A replacement for Nicky Butt. I'd like us to sign Xabi Alonso. A player that can take free kicks would be nice. Who would you like to sell in January: Smith. Don't think we have much of value and we aren't that deep. Thoughts on your manager so far this season: We miss KK. Kudos to JK for making the team respectable, if not threatning. His poor management has cost us some points-- for example, Stoke City. General thoughts on your team so far: Dropped too many points to poor teams. Honestly believe that with Keegan in charge we could be doing what Aston Villa has done this season. Where do you think you’ll finish from this point to the end of the season: No reason we couldn't come in sixth or seventh. The top four and Villa aside, the league is awfully soft. Tottenham and Man City really ought to be better than they are. And Everton has injuries and no money.

Didn't even see the fucking game. First half I was envious-- everyone writing about how we'd finally got our best 11 out there. The entire second half was a slow motion train wreck. I'm trying to console myself that at least I didn't watch it, but reading about it through your descriptions was maybe worse. Every substitution, every single substitution. I couldn't believe my fucking eyes. Ok, I didn't see how well Geremi was playing, but Cacapa for Geremi? You've got to be fucking kidding me. Cacapa for Geremi?
