  1. Trapattoni set for Republic post

Trapattoni is tipped to be the new Republic of Ireland boss

Giovanni Trapattoni is the favourite to be named the new Republic of Ireland manager after a Football Association of Ireland board meeting on Wednesday.

The former Italy coach, 68, is expected to take over in May, once his contract at Red Bull Salzburg expires.

The Republic have been without a permanent boss since Steve Staunton was sacked in October after a poor Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Liam Brady is expected to be part of Trapattoni's backroom team.

Trapattoni is believed to have met a three-man FAI panel, which was set up to find a new manager, in Austria on Sunday.

FAI chief executive John Delaney confirmed on Monday that a board of management meeting would take place to approve an appointment.

He revealed that one name had been endorsed by the selection panel and that a media conference would be staged on Wednesday.

Trapattoni won six Serie A titles with Juventus and one with Inter Milan. He also led Bayern Munich, Benfica and Salzburg to league titles and managed Italy from 2000 to 2004.

A number of names had been linked to the Republic post, with former England coach Terry Venables reportedly keen to be Staunton's successor.

If Trappatoni is confirmed in his new post on Wednesday, it will bring to an end a long trawl for the new Republic boss following Staunton's sacking on 24 October last year.

I am pretty convinced that he will fail... Only Italians seem to understand his football logic.

  2. Newcastle boss Keegan targets midfield playmaker

    tribalfooball.com - February 12, 2008

Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan admits a midfield playmaker is a priority transfer target.

"We want some creativity, we've got some genuine players who can pass the ball and will pass the ball better when they are confident, but in terms of opening teams up, we're probably a little bit limited," said Keegan.

"Emre is the only one who can get Michael Owen in. Apart from that we want anybody else who can improve the team."

    Great to hear, but reliable?

  3. I was a big fan of KK, still is, but no. I'd ask a counter question to your friend instead; How about £100 million to big Sam, three years of continuety (sp?) and then what?

He would have bought useless players who always fight till the end (but can't pass and shoot)... Next Question?

  4.

Best team in the tournament by far. Again Egypt completely dominated, and should have been up by a few goals before they scored.

To be honest, this ACN has had some of the best football I have seen on display in the last few years. The performance of Egypt particularly. If this had been the World Cup, I believe Egypt were actually strong enough to emulate Turkey, Croatia and South Korea, and reach the final 4. Such was their organisation, confidence and pure application.

Sad it's over actually. A whole lot better than the s**** served up in the premier league (e.g. Chelsea-Pool)

    Totally agreed!

  5. Taylor should be dropped. He makes Bramble look like Terry.

Taylor has been better than Cacapa, every time they've played together, including this weekend.

I have no idea why so many people seem to be fooled by Cacapa. And please god don't use the myth of the Lyon captaincy making him good.

Cacapa was better than Taylor easily in the last home game. And even if Cacapa was as s*** as you seem to think it wouldn't make Taylor any better.

agreed, still don't get why KK didn't play Faye?!?!? You need a big and strong lad who takes on Carew...

  6. Nice to see us signing more young players.

Your sigs a bit odd tho

"Skirge and Keefaz are absolutly g*y, no doubt about it!

Given im one i should no..."

Shouldn't it be "I should know"

    maybe? :S

So what you are saying is that you're gay then?

This forum is full of Gays! :-) Get yourself one...

  7. Emre is hands down a better option than Geremi. The reason Emre seems like a '45er' (yuck) is that his fitness record has been poor in his time here and he's very rarely been truly match fit. Emre has had much less time on the pitch than Geremi this year and has been much, much more effective. Think Emre really should be one of the focal points of our attacking game, a partnership with him and Jailbait Barton sounds exciting (and scary to be fair). Geremi's legs are gone, he's lazy and hogs all set pieces despite not being particularly good at them. Making him captain was one of the most laughable decisions in recent NUFC history to be honest. Nonetheless, his ability to play a pass/create occasionally mean he can be a handy, ageing squad player. Nothing more.

    They're both s**** if we're splitting hairs.

What about you (if we're splitting hairs)?

  8. Infact, instead of opening a new forum, lets just ban the c***s that don't go to games. Easy. Then all the PROPER fans could talk properly.

That is quite a good idea actually. Didn't you already try and fail with the first idea? ;)

You do know I was taking the piss, right?  I thought that was plain to see.

Has to be a good joke, if an explanation is needed... :-)

  9. And leave the real football talk to those who've earned their right to an opinion?

That's a big assumption you're making there, isn't it?  I know it's a popular opinion (esp. among certain season ticket holders, funnily enough) that "being there and seeing it all" equates to amazing football expertise but, let's face it, that's bollocks.

True. I know people who are going to a football ground every week, but haven't got a clue. You could also argued, that you must have been PLAYING football to understand the game... Going to a ground has nothing to do with the knowledge of football!

  10. Special mention for Tunisia's Yassine Chikhaoui. Zidane look-alike. At 21, he has excellent fluid movement.

    looked a really good player.

He IS a really good player...

What's he been like with FC Zurich? Does he play as an out and out striker? or does he play just behind?

Ben Saada, the little number 7 was eye catching as well, and scored a brilliant free-kick a-la Robert.

He plays just behind. Think he's able to play as an out and out striker...  He's brillant for Zurich - week in week out. Doesn't seem to like colder days, but he's just excellent. Was touted all over Germany last year, and every single manager is regretting his doubts. :-)

    Great future ahead of him...

  11. It was hilarious watching the replay of the goals on SKY just after the final whistle at St James' in the concourse area. This guy was screaming at the TV saying 2 Boro players were offside, so i turned around and said to him why aren't you screaming at the defence for allowing 2 players to be coming in at the back post and winning a header when trying to supposedly defend a lead.

I bet you didn't.  I bet you mumbled it to your mate quiet enough so that the bloke couldn't hear.

    :-)
