  4. Diarra agrees Pompey deal Frenchman handed three-and-a-half year deal Last updated: 16th January 2008 Diarra: Pompey-bound The French international has been locked in talks with Pompey boss Harry Redknapp this week after they agreed a fee in the region of £5million with Arsenal for the midfielder. Diarra has agreed personal terms and passed a medical at Fratton Park and is set to be unveiled as Pompey's latest signing later this week. The former Chelsea man has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Portsmouth and could make his debut this weekend against Derby. Diarra, who only joined Arsenal during the summer transfer window, decided to move on after growing increasingly frustrated with his lack of first-team opportunities at Emirates Stadium. The 22-year-old opted for a transfer as he was concerned that his dearth of action for Arsenal could damage his chances of winning a place in France's Euro 2008 squad. Diarra will be hoping to earn a regular place in Redknapp's starting XI as Pompey battle for a place in Europe. Oh well that's another one gone

  14. Barton back in training by Alex Livie, 15 January 2008 Nigel Pearson has confirmed Joey Barton has returned to training with Newcastle. The midfielder has been away from the club since he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident in Liverpool over the festive period. Barton is currently on bail and Pearson believes the midfielder needed to be brought back into the fold. "The bail rulings are in place and at some point Joey had to be re-introduced to training because, at the end of the day, he's one of our players and it's a part of his rehabilitation to get back involved,” said Pearson. “He's got back in the last couple of days to assess his fitness and we will go from there.'' Pearson is in caretaker control following the departure of Sam Allardyce and he is preparing the side for the FA Cup replay with Stoke. Morale is low in the camp and the mood was not improved by the mauling at the hands of Manchester United at the weekend. “The circumstances are quite difficult because of the timescale,” Pearson added on Setanta Sports News. “It came as a shock to everyone last week and the result on Saturday has had a huge bearing on the mood. It has not been easy. "But what's important now is that the players are prepared for the game tomorrow - that's the big concern. We have to make sure we get a performance and a result. "We all have a responsibility to get on with things as best we can. It's very simple for me, the staff and the players. We have to maintain our dignity and be professional. "There's a lot of uncertainty at this time and players and staff are feeling vulnerable, but we still have a job to do and we have to put those personal feelings to one side. Our reputations are on the line.''
  15. Houllier eyes Toon hot seat Jan 15 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle FORMER Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant manager’s job at Newcastle United. My information is that if the Frenchman was installed in the hot seat at St James’s Park he would not be averse to bringing in Alan Shearer as his No 2. And my feeling is that working with Houllier is something that Shearer would consider. Certainly Shearer must be feeling bemused about the whole “inexperienced” situation and promises from the United hierarchy that he will be considered as their manager in a couple of years’ time. For unless Shearer decides to cut his teeth in management with another club, he will be just as inexperienced in two years’ time as he is now. But experience is something Houllier certainly has in abundance – not to mention the ability to win trophies. As well as winning the treble of League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Liverpool in season 2000-01, Houllier has won the French Championship with Paris St Germain and latterly with Lyon for the last two seasons. Houllier was the man Sir John Hall wanted following the departure of Glenn Roeder but United instead went for Sam Allardyce. As a result, Houllier took another job in his own country and he is now France’s technical director. Because of his position and standing in the game, Houllier will not make a formal application for the United job but he would jump at the chance to come to St James’s Park. And his boss Jean-Pierre Escalette of the French Football Federation has indicated he would not stand in the way of Houllier if he wanted to try his luck at St James’s Park. But only one man will make the decision – United owner Mike Ashley. And as reported in The Chronicle last night, he returns from Hong Kong today to take charge of the situation. In the meantime there is no shortage of a top men interested in the post which is often dubbed as a poisoned chalice. I took a call last night from the No 2 to a top Premier League manager putting their case. And today the man who was officially ranked as the sixth best club coach in the world, 55-year-old Brazilian Abel Braga, contacted me to throw his hat into the ring. His representative, SFA Licensed Players Agent Alex McLaughlin, told me: “Abel is a very experienced coach who has outstanding tactical and coaching skills and he has managed at the highest levels in both Brazil and France. “He is currently with Internacional Brazil and they have just won the Dubai Cup beating Inter Milan. “He is looking for an opportunity to return to Europe and he knows all about the situation at Newcastle United and he believes he can bring success to whichever club he joins.”
  16. I'm not 100% convinced by him! Yeah he's been good where ever he's been but just don't get the wow factor from him. Whatever happens just wish it would happen soon, as it's dragging on a bit We need those 3 points against Bolton just to give us a bit of breathing space

  21. Yes but make it this bloody week as the transfer windows gonna be shut and were stuck with a shite midfield!
  22. BONTEMPI

    Darren Bent

As fred looks to be moving to the spuds, how about getting Bent in place of Shola? I'd take him for 4m as he's been a faliure there. Can't see them demanding much more than that for him
  23. Have to admit I don't mind Houllier as a bloke or as a manager, but only if Shearers involved like. Still think Keegan\Shearer combo would work better
