Makes sense to me, infact this is how they should be starting, Gomes isn't mobile enough to play that role.
It makes sense to take off your only renowned striker for a midfielder when you're 2 goals down with 20 minutes to go? I know there are better strikers around and Portugal are probably better without Nuno Gomes starting the game, but in this situation it is a strange sub.. Certainly not an all out atacking move as you'd expect, or bringing on a striker who can force a break through (Pauletta)...
