I was there but I can't recall if I was in the Leazes end or in a seat on the Leazes side of the east stand. There was only ever going to be one winner on that day. The strange thiing though was that Ozzy was not as unpopular a manager at the time to the fans than his record should have suggested. He blooded a lot of kids that year, and that was part of the problem, if you thought we were a little too open and too biased towards forward play under KK, it was nothing compared to Ozzy's team, hehe, they were a lot of fun to watch despite the results. Absolutely no doubt in my mind though that had they not made the change then we would have went down to the third tier for the first time in our history.

He still doesn't have any ability going forward, and that's fine if he does a job at the unglamorous side things. Think in today's football we sometimes want players to be jack of all trades rather than a master of one. As you sometimes need to carry a flair player in your team, you sometimes need to put up with players of limited forward thinking ability too, to create a balance. That shot from perch was pretty sweet though, would have been fitting reward for his recent form had it just snuck inside the post.

This. I watched the game again on Monday and while I thought he played well at the time he played much better than I thought. Really outstanding performance. I'm not dismissing his performance at all, he did very well, but, and this is an unpopular view point, Perch played a big role in that, since he has no ability whatsover going forward, he just sat in there and played the destroyer role, freeing Guthrie up to do what he does best which is to supply a little creativity. Still backing up Tiote and Cabaye though despite his fine form, those two are by a mile our top pairing in the middle.
