That's exactly how I've seen it for a couple of years now. The growth of the Champions League and the money on offer has been so monstrous, that the ability to access it has become self-perpetuating for a cohert of 'elite' clubs. Outside of this 'elite', everyone else essentially serves as a feeder club should a top class player emerge. Apart from the occasional break into the top 4, the limit of achievement for ourselves, Everton, Spurs and everyone below is the laughable Europa League - and even then you have to contend with wealthy Champions League clubs being parachuted in as a reward for failure and likely knocking you out. The Champions League has been ruinous to club football IMO. Not that Man City, Chelsea and Arse will care mind.

Where do you suppose we progress to? Regular Champs League is out of the question unless we're bought out by rich Arabs (Financial Fair Play could of course crush that too). The Europa League is piece of sh*t, and any player of true class wouldn't care to be involved. What's that leave? The FA Cup and League Cup?! The reality is, unless you're in the Champs League, you can't expect to hold onto these sort of players.

Unless a new owner was an Arab multi-billionare, would a new owner really make a difference? The sums needed to repeatedly break into the top four are now vast, and the second tier of Europe is an utter joke. It's only natural any top class play aspires to play in a Champs League club. That's where the money and prestige is.

It's all about the Champion's League now, unfortunately. The Europa League (our best hope) is utter shit, a complete joke. Can't say I blame Cabaye for wanting away. You only get once chance at such a career. We could of course reject any approaches, but our ambition amounts to turning a decent profit on our players and not being relegated. That's it.
