  1. God, it's just going to get worse in the papers though, isn't it?  "Wahhh, why is a good player at a club outside the top six, how is he going to single handedly win us the World Cup in four years unless he's playing for Man U or Chelsea, Liverpool need a striker and are interested in the 6 foot 6 centre forward, Drogba's getting old, Man City have money, why haven't they bought the 6 foot 8 target man yet yet, I've heard he's going to Barcelona, Real Madrid have had their head turned by the 8 foot superstar"

Hope he can keep his feet on the ground and not believe his own hype too much.

Just seems like a very simple guy really, so I doubt it. I honestly think part of the reason he's doing so well is due to him revelling in being the number 9 at Newcastle rather than aspirations to play in the top four etc etc etc. Think he'll be at Newcastle for a very long time still and will only ever leave if he is forced to. So just enjoy the hype because it means he's doing really well for Newcastle.

  2. Armand Traore to Birmingham on loan? Depressing.

How are we not in for that? Would be a really good backup and can also play on the wing too.

Who is their first choice left back? Would he get more games there?

Ridgewell I believe. I'm thinking they will play Traore on the wing though, as they couldn't get Zoggy. Traore is really effective as a winger too.

  3. Awesome. Looks an absolutely fantastic deal we managed to get in the end.

Big time Kahonas from MA and the gang. Completely schooled some chumps on here in the art of negotiation.

  4. Judging by Hughton's comments, and with him first of all saying he can play in the striker position, I'd imagine that's where he's primarily going to play him.

Agreed. However, if Jonas or Routledge are injured at any point we would then likely have him out wide, as we don't particularly have any quality wingers behind those two.

  5. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newcastle-united/nufc-news/2010/08/27/newcastle-in-for-robbie-keane-and-ben-arfa-72703-27149218/2/

Finally an article from Lee Ryder with some actual information:

Hughton said (of Robbie Keane) today: “His name has been mentioned and that is what we would expect at this stage. We are close to the end of the transfer window.

“He is, though, a player who I know very well.

“There is an association there and a connection.”

Hughton also confirmed that there have been developments on Ben Arfa.

He said: “There have been some discussions with Ben Arfa and at the moment they are still ongoing.”

Hughton added: “Ben Arfa is a player who can play in the striker position, the two wide positions or just off the front.

“We’ve just got to make sure, as I have continually said, that by the time the window shuts we have the squad that is capable of getting us through the down periods when we’ll have injuries.”

Interesting. I think the versatility of Ben Arfa is key, and Dos Santos is similar in his ability to play those positions also. I think any other striker we bring in will be a versatile one, and not just an out and out striker.

  6. Both Marseille and Ben Arfa are seemingly a bit tricky to deal with and so negotiations, although close to being finalized, could very well break down at any point. I reckon Keane would then be a last minute fall back should this happen. In actuality though, I would hope we would go for Gio Dos Santos instead of Keane.

  7. Good news it seems.I think Newcastle have a huge advantage because he will have the greatest assurances of where he fits into the team.

Bremen have some very very good players who are similar to him, and so a few bad games and he could be yanked. He's dealt with this at Lyon and Marseille. I think he just wants to play regularly and be allowed to make a few mistakes and grow from there. Newcastle is the ideal situation for this.
