True. But you are really living and dying with Moyes with this approach. When he goes there isn’t another manager that can take that style forward.

Yeah, I think they should have binned of Moyes.

But if you are going to keep him then you have to give him those types of players or it won't work at all.

Should have gone for Potter IMO.

I’m not even saying they’re shit. I think Maguire is a much better player than he’s credited as. McTominay, I don’t really rate but we obviously did rate him as there was interest and I trust our scouts. I just think they’re deeply unambiguous signings that are not going to help West Ham to improve and for the money they’ll cost they could do so much better. You’re right though that they are perfect Moyesy’s boys

I hear you. I just think Moyes has already shown that he can challenge for the European spots and even for the top 4 when he has the types of players he likes to work with.

McTominay and Maguire are the tier of signing you make as a club that accepts you have no ambition. They might be able to contribute to some middling finishes for a few years but they’ll command big fees and big salaries without contributing that standard on the pitch. I’d be absolutely gutted as a fan if those were our targets

I don't think this is necessarily true.

You have to know who your manager is and what works for them.

I don't think there's any guarantee that those signings fail. Maguire has obviously more than had it at Man Utd but there was once an excellent defender there; an old school no-nonsense marauding CB. It's clear as day that he needs a fresh start.

Jury's out on McTominay but he's not the comedy signing the early-summer discourse on here would have you believe. You don't get to over 200 appearances for ManU / 40 caps for Scotland in the early stages of your career if you've not got something about you.

Exactly. You always have to look at the type of signings that typically work for a manager.

Maguire will be in a team that sits deeper rather than plays with a high line and will be asked to keep it simpler playing out from the back. He's also a major set piece threat, which Moyes focuses on.

McTominay is a typical big athletic Moyes midfielder that he gets a lot out of like Fellaini and Soucek have been for him.

I'd have been happier if they forced continental players on him again that he doesn't know what to do with tbh, as that's when things go badly for him.

Moyes was getting 4th at Everton when he was just allowed to sign the types of players he wanted.

First time having for sympathy with west ham mind, replacing rice with such a clogger.

These are great signings for a Moyes style of play.

Could see both doing very well at West Ham.

They'll be a nuisance to play against. Especially if they also find Moyes a more robust striker and a winger on the left that is more convincing. Barnes would have been perfect opposite Bowen for Moyes.

The guy I feel sorry for in all of this is Paqueta, as I think he'll feel increasingly out of place in the team.

I've always thought the same thing re Bruno getting caught in transition with the way we press forward, I think this is where a lot of his fouls come from. But I wonder if Eddie is looking at all three midfielders defending according to their position on the pitch rather than have an out and out athletic defensive mid?

Yeah, maybe. I do think we also get more creativity to open up defences with Bruno as an 8 as he seemed more of a forward threat when in the team with Shelvey deeper.

On the James Alcott YouTube he showed Hojlund dropping deep a lot to link the play. I’ve ever actually seen him play though.

Yeah, I'm not trying to imply he can't do so at all, just like Ramos all around game more. When Nunez was still at Benfica he even played as an attacking mid at times.

  8. 4 minutes ago, The Prophet said:

I haven't seen much of Ramos other than the WC and a couple of Champions League games, but at this moment in time he looks more complete than Hojlund. That's not to say the latter doesn't have a higher ceiling though. His all round game needs a lot of polishing, but he's talented.

Yeah, both are talented. Atalanta and Benfica were on a fair amount on BT sport last season, so saw them both a fair bit. Really like Ramos as a complete package, but Hojlund does have the athletic freak factor that can be such a plus in the Premier League.

  9. I've seen people mentioning that we could do with more creativity in midfield.

How do they think pushing Bruno further up like he was initially playing, when Shelvey was sat deeper impacts that?

I ask because I think we really need a more athletic defensive minded holding midfielder. I don't like how open our midfield looks in transition at times with Bruno sitting deep.

I was following the Arsenal Vs Monaco game yesterday and Fofana the DM for Monaco looked great. He's a physical, athletic DM but his passing was quality too.

Think he's now in the last year of his contract as well. Can't believe no one has gone for him.

@KaKa Looks like Hojlund was first choice for us and PSG, with Ramos second. Now we've got Hojlund they've moved for Ramos.

Hope we've got the right one.

    Good luck man!

I actually like Hojlund and think he'll end up being good. He's a big, strong and quick and has decent technique. He'll suit the Premier League.

Bug fan of Ramos though and would have gone with him instead as I just think his game is more versatile. Gets involved in play more while still being a legit goal threat in the box.

I think if you end up playing with a number 10 proper then Hojlund will work well, but in more of a 4-3-3 setup I like Ramos dropping into the half spaces better.

    €85m :kinnear:

Is he any good? Never seen him. Seems a mental amount to pay for someone who scored 9 goals last year.

Played behind Zapata last season. Looked good when he featured though.

Could see him do well annoyingly enough, but could take some time. Glad they didn't get Ramos who I think would have been a really good fit.

What the fuck is going on at West Ham, think they’re going to have a horrid season

Dinosaur manager that can only work with a very specific type of player.

Ownership too weak to stick by a more modern setup and approach and so always end up running back to Dino managers when there's a wobble.

    Complete and utter mess.

He’s been claiming he put the idea of eddie forward for a while. Probably thinks he’s responsible for champs league qualification

    The guy has serious issues.

I don't dispute MLS is huge in America, but personally speaking I can't see myself staying up till midnight to see Yedlin and players of that irk play. Saudi Arabia have really only started taking their league seriously in the last 18 months. MLS has been around for a good 10-15 years - I couldn't tell you 10 people I know that watch it. And that's with Beckham, Zlatan and now even with Messi there.

I was watching highlights of Messi's debut and almost spat all over my screen when I saw Yedlin was playing right back for his team ... and still over hitting every cross.

If SA is in for the long game sure, they have to build all the infrastructure around it, not just bring in huge names. On top of that, you have to rely on footballers accepting SA as a place to live and to buy in to the way of life there. There’s a lot that needs to go together but it’s not out of the question

Look at the players they are signing this summer. It's not just big names.

As far as living over there goes they will be putting these players up in the most lavish and luxurious accomodations, which they are already known for. The lifestyle will probably be just as big an attraction for some.

  16. Players that go to Saudi aren't just going to come back after a couple of seasons. They are all going to be earning more than any Euro club will be willing to pay them.

When the summer hols come around and all these players are hanging out together and they get to bragging about how much they earn etc, the pull will only get stronger for those that aren't there already.

People are going to watch it too. As more players folks are familiar with move there and the teams get better, they will tune in.

A few viral clips of ASM, Firmino and Mahrez linking up for example and enough people will give it a look in.

But if they ever get into a position to really directly compete - in terms of play in the same competitions - with European teams, they will have to play along with some measure of FFP, which makes paying Mbappé 300 billion dollars a day look somewhat questionable.

This is all a bit Kerry Packer.

Don't think they will ever attempt to join the Euro competitions as it would kill their advantage of spending as much as they want on players and wages.

Think it's more likely they end up becoming the actual super league eventually,  with most of the better players going up against each other while being paid ridiculous sums of money over there.
