It's because none of them like running off the ball, has been a feature of our play for years now, and quite clearly some of them are just incapable of it. Give the ball to Maximin then stand back and see if he does anything with it. That's about as intricate as it gets with this lot.

Yeah, absolutely. It was so lazy and pathetic.

Pile into the box together to "defend" and then punt it to St. Maximin on the odd occasion we get the ball, and hope he does something.

In retrospect I wonder if just throwing it and playing young lads, would have been the the best play

I can see why Howe opted against that, as he is trying to create a culture of trying to win every game, but in hindsight using some youngsters instead of some of these lot probably would have been the right move.

Think today will be another lesson for the staff, in really grasping how desperately poor most of these lot are. They really cannot be relied on or trusted outside outside of emergency situations.

Mad that we went from the Man U performance to this. I know we're a team better suited to the counter and all that but it is staggering to watch Premier League footballers fuck up the absolute basics against League Two opposition.

Amazing for Cambridge, like. Sure they'll have an amazing night in town.

I think at the minute we are actually probably better off playing against teams that are more capable going forward and who are trying to play football, as it affords us a bit more space to try and play the way Howe wants, particularly on the counter.

Against teams that are actually looking to sit back and close up shop a bit more we have no chance with the current lot. They do not have the patience, smarts or subtlety to work the ball around to find openings. They are so so awful at that.

Some of the big babies looked out of sorts/in a huff all game. Like they knew they would be replaced, the gravy train was ending, and they'd have to shape up or ship out.

Because they're born losers...they chose to be defeatists.

    Others tried...but aren't good enough, anymore/if ever.

    This 100%.

They cannot handle the transition into playing in a way that actually demands far more from them. They're all getting exposed big time.

All grown accustomed to just sitting in their box to defend and not showing any initiative going forward. The culture of laziness and a complete lack of accountability has run way too deep for some.

If we need someone who knows the club and could settle down straight away then I'd rather go for Merino.

Absolutely love Mikel Merino. That would be epic.

If he wants out though they kind of can’t be setting final prices like this. That’s a lot of money for a 21 year old.

Saying that I would pay it personally.

Since being linked I've caught a few Lille games and I like him a lot.

He's got a lot of ability and presence for a 21 year old centre back. He could potentially be at the heart of our defence for the next 10 to 15 years.

I'd pay their asking price too. Think it will prove to be a bargain.

None of those are guaranteed to hit the ground running in the league, which is what we desperately need. Gina was an ever present in a team that won CL/PL & had almost 200 points across those 2 seasons. It's a no brainer.

I get what you're saying, and agree to some extent, but I tend to be more wary of the prem experience thing, as it can often go too far the other way and mean you miss out on someone far better. Ultimately, that's down to the scouts to really identify the right player that can adapt well.

Afterall, Gini is definitely going to need an adjustment period too, coming in from PSG having hardly played this season and with a fair amount of pressure to perform in a team that is not at the level of his previous couple of teams.

That was a 24 year old coming into a major league for the first time in his career under a Steve McClaren side.

This is a 31 year old who’s spent the last 5 and a half years competing for, and winning, Premier League titles & Champions League titles. Other than the last 4-5 months he’s played pretty much week in, week out.

Forget that first season here, this is what we’d be getting. Would be on a par with the Trippier signing.

    Very fair point.

If we're bringing in Botman it would also be useful to have his fellow dutchman who is already familiar with the club coming in too, so that would be another plus.

  9. Just now, Anderson said:

People turning their nose up at him.

He'd immediately be a step up on anyone else we have in midfield. Of the midfielders who are available/been linked to us, he's probably the best we could hope for.

Fofana at Lens, Arthur at Juve, Guimares at Lyon, Nunes at Sporting, Van de Beek at Man U ... are just some of the names we have been said to be looking at. These are some very talented players that would be right up there in quality for both the short and long term.

I'm really good with whatever the club decides on in any case. I'm really impressed with the new manager, his staff, and Mandy and Mehrdad, and trust them to have thought everything out well before making their decision.

Thought he totally changed his game at Liverpool to how he played with us, mind? Was basically just an attacking mid who supported the striker or sometimes shoved out wide from memory. Never performed well or regularly played in centre midfield for us.

I think he would have learned a lot and developed at Liverpool, plus during his time with us to some degree. He was really consistent for them. High energy, pressing, carrying the ball forward, recycling it. Seemed to always play well when I watched them and feel like someone comfortable in possession is just what we need. Great short term solution who I think can come straight in.

    Probably go to Arsenal, mind.

You've made some really good points about what he could offer playing in a system that will require similar things to what was asked of him at Liverpool, so that would definitely make sense.

At Liverpool he was always typically in a midfield three, which is more of what we have gone to of late with Joelinton dropping deeper, and so if we persist with that setup then it would definitely make me more comfortable with him coming in, as I think a midfield three does suit him much better.

I can understand and kind of agree. But he'd definitely do a job.

I'd hope so, but if I'm being really honest, I don't really trust the guy in our current predicament. The exact same one he let us down in previously. Guy was invisible for so many games.

I think he's a great plug and play in an already established team with lots of high quality players, where he can then fill in the gaps, but we need more than that from a new midfielder.

  12. There are so many interesting players out there and it's been such a nice fresh start with the new regime, I would rather not bring back anyone that was here previously who didn't really do that great for us. If he does come in, then fair enough, and I'll be hoping for the best, but I'd be more than happy if we went for someone else.

  13. Apparently there was a report in Spain saying we bid £30 million for Martial but he doesn't want to join and is instead holding out for a move to Barcelona, who are only interested if they can get him in on loan.

  14. You guys really need to speak to some Arsenal fans about PEA man. No coincidence that their recent uptick in results has coincided with him being out of the team. Probably not the striker we need in our current predicament.

  15. 2 hours ago, RodneyCisse said:

Not being funny but why not bid 55m for Vlahovic just to mess with Arsenal, driving their price up.

We should probably focus on getting the players we need in and not playing mind games with Arsenal

Why haven't Atleti taken us to the cleaners here?

I can't get over this £12m fee

So surreal that these transfers are back. I missed ambition so much.

Because it just isn't the greatest idea really. There is a lot of money around Newcastle right now, and with good relations that could benefit them far more in the future, whether that be selling us more players or getting players off us going forward.

Besides Trippier has been a great signing for them having helped them achieve great success, and with his deal running down he had a desire to return to England. Atletico have done right by both the player and also dealt very well and fairly with Newcastle. It's a smart move.

    Embolo is frustrating as fuck

Has the tools but lacks the final product. He's a talent though and could still be useful in the right setup.

£12m excluding add-ons according to Hope's tweet. Absolutely fucking insane.

I think that fee is about right to be honest.

He's 32 years old this year and his contract is running down. Paying £25 million would have been very harsh on us, and so happy to see that it's looking like it's closer to half of that.

Botman seems like the kind of signing we should be making. You're hopefully getting a player who'll develop into a cornerstone of the team for the next decade.

I get the idea behind signing Trippier and Ramsay of course, players who can hit the ground running and hopefully keep us up. I'd definitely prefer a bunch of FM-tastic wonderkids though

Yeah, I think Trippier makes complete sense because he's got leadership qualities which we really need, and he knows the manager and his expectations completely.

Ramsey is a big worry fitness wise, but if they have any kind of assurances over that, then it would be a very solid move. However, if he just came over and then got injured it would be a disaster.

  20. In my opinion £30 million for a 21 year old Botman will prove to be incredibly cheap. Been trying to catch Lille games ever since we've been first linked with both he and Jonathan David, and I think he is a fantastic defender that would really fit the premier league.

Favourite thing about him is that he's a bit of a bully, but without being rash about it. He's very impressive physically. We really need a defender that is tough and has a bit more of a dominant mindset. Our defenders are such nervous pansies.

  21. 20 minutes ago, Stifler said:

Latin plays mostly on the wing or as an inside forward position though.

David will be come good and I would love him here, but he would need time to settle and we are not currently in a position to provide that.

Larin has mostly played as a striker in his career not as an inside forward. Besiktas are using him more as an inside forward currently, but he is very much a striker. I do like his versatility though, and that would certainly come in handy if we sign him. Brereton Diaz is another we have been linked with that is a striker that has also been used on the left as an inside forward of late.

I think this is something Howe is actively looking for i.e. a more versatile forward with that skill set. It's reminiscent of Josh King who typically played as a second forward in tandem with Callum Wilson, but could also play on the left side.

  22. Yusuf Yazici from Lille (left footed attacking midfielder that can play on the right) being linked on loan and Cyle Larin from Besiktas (versatile striker) whose contract runs out at the end of the season being linked.

Both would be very useful signigns at incredibly good value. Yazici is not in the Lille team as much this season, but played a big part in them winning the title last year. Cyle Larin is a Canadian striker I have liked a lot for a long time. Power and pace and can also play on the left, very surprised no prem team has looked at him before now.
