If Ritchie starts LB tomorrow then we'll know who's been doing tactics / selection over the last 8 months.

Really looking forward to tomorrow. Going to be such an eye opener.

Everything from the team selection, the formation, the way we play, is all going to tell us a lot.

It's all there in the post at the top of the page. Just expand the quote.

Everyone saying how well he came over in the interview, but I'm less happy tbh.

Although he said a lot of positive things and was measured, he was maybe too measured and there was a lack of enthusiasm or passion. He also seemed very much a Bruce man - My hopes for Jones came from wishing that he was hired against Bruce's wishes and was being held back by Bruce and not allowed to shine. Seems maybe that wasn't the case and we've already seen much of what Jones can bring to the table.

Hope I'm wrong and that was just him being polite and trying to remain level and calm in his first interview, and either way its only a couple of games, but still he didn't exactly inspire me that we're going to see much different.

He was definitely trying to be a bit more low key, due to all the histrionics around Bruce almighty getting flung out of the place.

The key bits for me were that he emphasized the work they had been doing on the pitch and tactically, with no off days from training. A very subtle message sent there.

Think we'd have a better chance with that being a new manager's first game though, atmosphere will be immense.

I'm probably just being greedy af as Chelsea is the first game I'm going to since Rafa's last.

Ah, I see that makes sense tbh

Would have been nice for you to see the new manager's first game, but I think they might be trying to ensure he has some time to get his backroom staff together and make the arrangements for them all and their families to come over and settle in.

It's a home game against a side that have won up here once in 10 years when fans are in the ground.

Yes, you are very right. Lets hope Graeme can pull of an upset and it will be a fantastic send off for him as a real Newcastle fan, unlike Bruce.

  6. He comes across really sound.

Made a point of mentioning how much they've trained and the players have been given as much information as possible, and how they'll all be well aware of their responsibilities on the pitch tactically.

    Coincidence? I say, no.

Said he's in charge for the next two. Ugh, was hoping we'd have a guy in for Chelsea.

Probably better the new guy doesn't come in and potentially get licked by Chelsea. Let Graeme have that one ;D

Because this is the whole point. The 2 aren't comparable.

You're looking for a manager who has done something at a high level and proven he can maintain or elevate a team. Fonseca couldn't even do this with Roma where he had some great players and a huge budget following the sale of Allison. A top class manager came in to Inter, brought in 3 names and broke the Juve monopoly overnight.

People are fawning over an unproven manager who did an average job in an average league because he edits well on YouTube.

Nah, man Roma were selling off players they didn't have great players or a huge budget under Fonseca, and in fact the club got sold during his time there.

Prior to that he won three league titles and 3 domestic cups in Ukraine all back to back. Also took Paco de Ferreira in Portugal to Champions League qualification their greatest ever league finish. You can't dismiss what he has achieved so far. it's certainly far more than what Lampard has.

Lampard is a horrendous manager. No idea about phases of play and on record as saying he doesn’t believe in having a particular playing philosophy.

Just look at how his Chelsea side played, suicidal, formless high press and a deep backline. Similar to how we play under Bruce. Nothing compact; the bloke is clueless tactically and got away with it due to the players at his disposal. Another in a long line of British “tough, tell it like it is” man-managers with no idea whatsoever with regards to modern tactics.

He’s the only one on our supposed shortlist I’d be genuinely upset about us hiring. Like replacing Bruce with a young Sherwood (might be hyperbole but I se similarities between them).

Now this post right here is absolutely terrifying, and it could very well end up being exactly what we do end up with under Lampard.

Eh, how are Chelsea and Roma comparable?

I seem to remember Chelsea finishing 3rd and winning the EL the season before lampard joined.  Wasn't like he turned them around.

Yeah, that bit wasn't a sound argument.

You honestly dont think Billy Gilmour comes here to play for Lampard over Norwich, or that other prospects who know Lampard wont come to the club. Especially younger players knowing his views on giving youth a chance. We aren't going to go and sign top names immediately, but young prospects who can turn into fantastic players will. Even the example of Hudson-Odoi is valid. Players away from Chelsea and on the continent know the name. Simply dismissing him because he was sacked by Chelsea, as many managers have been in better situations would be silly. Especially in favour of a man who was sacked by a team in Italy who finished below where Chelsea did in the premier league

I think this post and your previous one made some very fair arguments.

I'd be disappointed as I think we could potentially hit a home run with someone like Fonseca right off the bat, and I'm really concerned about Franks temperament and the media bias that will follow like we just had with Bruce, however I'd get behind the guy if it did happen. I'd be really worried though.

What you said about getting in young talented players I'd agree with. Signing the likes of Gilmour, Gallagher and loads of other talented Chelsea youth that they may be willing to sell would be a big plus for sure.

Personally Lampard would be my choice over the other names except conte.

Well at least someone will be happy.

I find the prospect a worrying one. Don't think he has a cool enough head to handle the job. Seemed incredibly stroppy when in the Chelsea job.

  13. I really think these local media guys are like groupies. They like the British managers so they can paddy up to them and hang out with them sometimes I guess? It's so weird.

Get the impression they don't like the foreign managers because they are more professional and don't really get all pally with the media in the same way.

  14. Man, it would be such a massive let down.

The irony on top of it is he would still have all the concerns that some had with Fonseca, except none of the potential upside because in actuality he hasn't achieved anything at all in football. Why on Earth should this man just walk into this job with virtually no experience?

  15. Ah well ... the dream was fun while it lasted. They're seemingly wowed by the celebrity status of the recent famous player that Lampard was.

And we'll be stuck with more relentless bullshit from the media because the golden boy can never do any wrong. We're screwed. Unless of course he comes in and is amazing, which is a pretty big longshot.

Blows my mind when former players say things about tactics and managers not being all that important and that it's down to the players as if they're not also playing against footballers at the absolute peak of fitness and mental attitude who are managed and have tactical instructions.

That's why they're all gettign left behind and all these foreign managers are taking up all the jobs, and then they get arsey about it. Ridiculous people.

I am actually inclined to believe Gerrard might have something, but the likes of Lampard, Rooney etc....can see them 1000 games down the line with every commentator saying they're " a great manager, deserve respect, treated unfairly" when they've relegated their 3rd club in a row

I mean you may well be right, it's one we'll have to wait to see play out, but in the meantime I'm certainly not too keen on having any of them here as I'd certainly be quite worried.

As you say Gerrard looks the most promising and I would give Howe credit too as he seems to have really embraced learning the more modern approaches to the game.

  18. Just now, gjohnson said:

Lampard, Gerrard and Howe are literally the next gen PFMs in the making. Possible shout out to Viera too

I'm not so sure I agree.

I think those lot actually care enough about what they're doing to pay attention to the more modern ideas in the game and to learn about them, especially as they all came up under better managers and all had to have taken their badges right from the outset.

All the older heads are just stuck in their ways and think all the tactical stuff and data analysis etc is all just a bunch of nonsense.

    Mark Hughes talking to Sky:

"Foreign managers, I always think it’s sometimes a little bit of a risk because a manager who doesn’t know the Premier League coming from another league, I think invariably they have a period where they are taken aback by the power and the pressure and the speed. That takes some getting used to.

"Maybe Newcastle haven’t got that time initially to really allow a manager to find his feet”

    my quote “yes I’m available”

nobody knew the league better than Bruce!!  With all his games and different clubs tally!

see that mountain way over there ?? ? that’s where you go with that shit!

It's a scam man. They know that time is up on the PFM and work is drying up. This is the propaganda being pushed to keep them in work.

They claim to know the league but they all always end up getting sacked with their clubs in a far worse place.

Allardyce was a complete disaster pulling this stunt at West Brom last season. Time for these lot to go away for good now man. Either go and learn something new or just retire for goodness sake.

The new bunch better not be listening to any of this horse shit. They could pull the wool over Ashley's eyes with this nonsense, which I'm sure is why he kept going for these duds, but please no more!

Of the current crop. Bielsa, Nuno and Frank came in with Championship squads. Hasenhuttl has done a solid job at Southampton. Potter, while English has come in from abroad and done a solid job at Brighton. Good coaches are good coaches.

    Amen to that.

Funny thing is when the takeover went through many were wanting most from that list you just shared! At some point we need to go out there and do the work to identify similar managers, and stop waiting on others to do all the work first.

Pochettino was another that Southampton brought in who was fantastic there and at Spurs.

Oh boy ... just hope we don't fall for the need a man for the relegation battle narrative. So uneasy about that whole thing.
