so used to "squad fillers" being 30/33yr olds so just crossed wires. It is just so hard to second guess this manager and board which is what quite a few of the forum loved I for one hated the " we are going for him" or " we are looking at..." from the manager and chairman at times. I would rather sit back relax and complain when it has happened at the end of the day we can scream we can shout its the guys running the show that are going to do as they please. An trying to stay on topic if Mort is "in charge" as much as he seems to try and say he is then I hope he is in regularly consultation with the manager as although SA cannot sign the cheque he can point the chairman in the right direction.

still only young though isn't he although I guess some would say we have had plenty of "clear out" players from the bigger clubs.
-
but again the only direct quotes from the manager is that he wants 2-3 quality in not how much we have which may be the papers doing a little of "padding out" You're not wrong, but in fairness I did say "if true". I could personally see there being a few quid knocking around for someone decent, then a couple of the newly-titled "squad fillers" to see us through. I'm not sure we should be buying any more defenders, at least unless it's a left-back, anyway. I personally wouldn't mind seeing David Edgar get a bit closer to the first team, he's only really had one off day (against Birmingham) and nobody else covered themselves in glory that night either. sorry Janitor wasn't having ago. I agree I believe there is money there I just dont believe Mort will allow SA to spunk 10-15mill on someone unproven and high risk, I dare bet during his reivew that we have done that to death. So when I am putting 2-2 together (what else can a fan do when there is nothing concrete) I hope that we are looking to only add to improve the squad and not to fill and there are funds but for the right player and more importantly the right price.

Just seen the chron article and as usual the spin + daggers are out no quotes from the big man himself regards budget but all of a sudden we have no money for this and no money for that. Although am I just hoping this is not true with rumours we wanted Brown on loan rather than an out right buy.

http://www.shieldsgazette.com/nufc/Sam-targets-three-new-signings.3604524.jp least the manager is making the right sort of noises even if we all cant agree what Mort means.

You just have to speak to Crespo, SWP last season, shev, wayne bridge to see that a massive club like chelsea is like any massive club unless your world best undropable class then the likes of chelsea will continue to stick you on the bench when they see fit. Anelka has a good thing going at Bolton they are improving and where he is at now he is a starter no matter what and by far their best player some players do like being put on a pedastal

Is it sad that I was more looking forward to Duff starting than Owen? Duff won't start either. Dave I know he wont thats why I said "I was" still papers say probably back for boxing day game V wigan which is really handy.
-
All summer he said he wasn't moving, and is saying it again now. Just total paper bullshit to keep linking him with the obvious 3 sides without any actual evidence. Paper spin really his dad is his agent and he said something along the lines of " he does not want to move but you never know what is going to happen"

Thing is if your willing to splash the cash you can get the best of both worlds as with the right ammount of money you can get great "here and now" talent who is still in their early 20's. It does not have to be 15-16 year olds nore does it have to be 30-33 year olds past their prime comming in to fill gaps. I never used age in my post, here & now refers to ability. Just dont want a load of Ben Tozer's signed during Jan even though they are needed due to shite at youth & resever level sorry only quoted you as I was following on from your point really (everyone is so jumpy about their posts lately). I agree that it is a sad state of affairs that our academy lads dont cut the mustard in the managers eyes but this is something that alot of clubs have been doing for a long time. Although it is the only action we have seen so far this does not mean it is our only business this window as in the summer window many of our signings were made with little to no press knowledge.

For the right price I would personally take him he is a very technically gifted player and as I have mentioned before his link up play is excellent and could be just what we need to be more creative comming from the middle I still shudder at the lack of passing ability at times and the lack of a creative direct approach which I think Gudjohnsen would bring. Years of experience and still relatively young and played for SA before ticks alot of boxes for me.

That's the kind of stuff NE5 has a field day with. If the manager wants him then so be it. £8m seems a lot though. This is just my personal view that we don't need more fairly slow strikers, however good their technique. We already have Viduka, Owen and Smith. We need an Anelka type IMO. It's not a given either that Mort will just hand over the funds to Sam, he'll probably want to see which way we are heading before handing over major cash. It may also come down to the relationship between Mort and SA as Mort may say "tell me who you would like and we will see what we can do" or he may say "you have a budget of £xmill to spend see what you can get" I know I am obviously simplifying things there but depending on the relationship SA may not even target a gudjohnsen type player.

not forgetting that it is very likely shev will move on either in jan or the summer.

Funny thing is many of the young prospects out there in europe dont always hit the ground running I remember when Ronaldo went to manu for about 15million I thought he wasn't really anything special but obviously with a lot of faith and a consistant approach from the manager the player is undoubtably one of the best midfield players in the league. Its a catch 22 situation you can either buy players already developed and proven and take the risk they wont adapt to the league and/or spunk 10-20 million on them. Or you buy young and try and use the coaching set up to develop them into a starting 11 player and you may have gotten a bargin although there is always the chance that they will never go beyond an ok type player i.e. Dave Nugent.

Would have preferred Gudjohnsen over viduka but obviously he is proud enough not to see Barcelona as a complete failure and wanted to fight on, if the papers are to believed which is probably a waste of time I cannot see Man city interested with just getting Nery Castillo on loan. Also West Ham supposedly have had a bid accepted but declined by the player it could be a great signing as either an option up front on where I see it more like the link between the midfield and strikers much like his chelsea days. Although is 6-8 million too much to spend on a 29/30 year old who really hasn't consistantly played for about 18months.
-
Diego?? possibly.... I mean I agree with everyone that until maybe this board has 1/2 transfers under their belt you can really pull a quote or two and come to a load of different conclusions. I see nothing wrong with buying for the future rather that buying a player that has to start as they are of the age where they will no longer stand for a bit of bench warming time.
-
seems to me that some think his comments mean he wants 16/17yr olds that arent very good but may come good with coaching and time to slowly blood in, he may mean more along the lines of those in the 20/22 age bracket those who already have experience but still have alot of time to mature and grow and potentially these sorts of signings can cost alot of money and can be worth while we have had the bad i.e hugo but you can still grab young talent just like man u have done with ronaldo in the past and nani and anderson from this summer.
-
its just such a relief to be able to say that these days without being sarcastic not so long ago we were all complaining that all we had was baba and carr and that was it. I really dont know how we 1. payed 1.8 million for him and 2. that he ever got a game for chelsea
-
would be a good addition at the right price (8 mill seems to have been thrown about in the papers) but would obviously seem to indicate the end for shola and probably either owen or extending vidukas contract I would be quite happy going for someone older and trying to get gudjonsson in for about the same money purely due to him being able to play in midfield and as a striker I never exactly ever got excited by an owen crouch partnership
-
possibly get a left back in for january let baba rot in the basement levels of the ground till his contract is up and then that gives enrique time without pressure to play every game and zoggy can go back to challenging duff (when back) for left wing
-
10 year head start tbf I can Taylor either becomming really good or just another one of our average plodders I guess its how he is played and how many injuries he gets on the way.
