I've not been excited about watching England for years. Absolutely detest the hype and 'Ingurland...it's coming home', mob, but it's been a complete breath of fresh air to see in form, hard-working, players like Kane, Vardy, Drinkwater and Alli be given an opportunity and performing well. The last thing I want to see is a reversion to the 'same old' when there's clearly an opportunity to build something really promising here.

I like Rooney and I don't want to get on his back given his record in an England shirt, but I think we look a far more cohesive without him in the side. There are simply better players out there at this moment that compliment one another in a team that looks full of attacking promise and intent. He's not a midfielder and he's not as threatening up front as either Kane or Vardy.

Shoehorning Rooney into the side will be England's undoing.
