  1. Knopfler wants the return of Local Hero Oct 22 2007 by Chloe Griffiths, The Journal MUSICIAN Mark Knopfler has told of his desire to see his classic theme from Local Hero ring round the terraces of St James’s Park once again. The former Dire Straits frontman spoke yesterday of his sadness that his 1983 song Going Home – the theme tune from the film Local Hero – has been sidelined at the ground. The musician, who was brought up in Gosforth, Newcastle and is an ardent Magpies fan, told The Journal how proud he was when his song was selected as the song for the players’ entrance on to the pitch – and he is now desperate to see it return as the official anthem. But the song was ditched at the beginning of the beginning of the season by officials, who said they wanted to “improve the atmosphere.” They plumped for punk band Sham 69’s If The Kids Are United. But now more than 1,000 Journal readers have registered their vote to get Local Hero returned to the terrace. Knopfler said: “I must admit to being surprised at the choice of If The Kids Are United as it was sung by a Cockney band and has already been used for a McDonalds advertising campaign. But I’ll stay an NUFC supporter no matter what.” http://www.journallive.co.uk/north-east-news/todays-news/2007/10/22/knopfler-wants-the-return-of-local-hero-61634-19987139/

He's more a winger than a lb. This season he played midfield most of the time. That's where he belongs because he just can't defend.
  3. I don't like these monday games. It can't be worse than our last moday game, though.
  4. Which version? It would be a instrumental & not that comedy mix either. I would crank it reeeeeeeeeeet for when the lads came out of the tunnel & hope a few thousand people sing the words over the top. OK, the 'original' always sounds a bit too old for me.
  5. He would be pretty stupid to stay in the SPL when he's that good.
  6. Which version? This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE03Ydc2-LM
  7. He's really small, but I think he can be used both as a (right) winger and attacking midfielder.
  8. Why didn't they drop Babayaro in that river and let him walk back blindfolded?

As a Liverpool fan I read this and wonder if you're actively seeking an implosion at your club. Anelka - great talent, bad attitude - he wants to play in the CL and if say he joined you in Jan and this time next year you were 8th or 9th you would see a lot of stories of him wanting to move on to a "bigger" club. As for Diouf.. talented player but will be nothing but trouble if he doesn't get his way. We had both and believe me you'll regret it if one or both are at your club next year. p.s. Samuel Eto'o tried to get his agent to get him a move to Anfield because he wanted to play with Owen. Houllier turned a £6m deal down and instead paid £10m for Diouf! I agree.
  10. Can't believe he is missing. http://www.voetbalglamour.nl/img/carlos%20tevez%20lelijk.jpg http://www.nrc.nl/multimedia/archive/00059/Geen_flitsscheiding_59486a.jpeg

Never really liked the lad TBH.
  15. Rather have 2 years of Owen than 15 mil. Who's bothered about 15 mil anyway? Mike isn't.
  16. Ordered it, together with a book called "The Toon" (A Complete History Of Newcastle United Football Club: Includes All The Action From Season 2003-2004 )
  17. Sorry for bumping this thread up. No link. Where has local hero gone to? Sep 29 2007 by Paul McMillan, Evening Chronicle IT’S OPENING chords send a shiver down the spine for some, but Newcastle United bosses say the iconic Local Hero now leaves the Tune Army feeling flat. Mark Knopfler’s 1983 classic has been removed from the playlist as the team runs on to the pitch at St James’ Park as officials say they are looking for ways to improve the atmosphere in the ground. Instead, the Geordie musician’s song has been replaced by London-based punk band Sham 69’s The Kids Are United because officials say it has an upbeat ending. But the change has hit a bum note with some fans, who say the swap is unnecessary. Frank Gilmour, of the Newcastle United Independent Supporters’ Association, said: “It should be used. The vast majority of Geordies – including me and my son – have it on their mobile phone as a ring tone. “It’s got to be as much a Geordie anthem as The Blaydon Races. I bet the vast majority of Geordies are upset it’s not being played anymore, especially as it’s written by a Geordie.” Marion Williams, of the fans’ liaison committee, said Local Hero was a personal favourite: “It sends shivers down my spine. There’s something about that piece of music. But I also know people who don’t like it and will be pleased it’s gone. “At the West Ham match people were talking about the atmosphere at half-time, which was dire. My son was saying that at West Ham they have cheerleaders, which is something I’m against. I think it’s a bit tacky.” A United spokesman said they were experimenting with different tunes and Local Hero still had its place on occasions. He explained: “We decided to change the music around at the start of the new season and we’ve used The Kids Are United for recent games as it ends with a football-style chorus of ‘United! United!’ which has always been a popular chant of our fans. “Lots of fans have different opinions on what music they’d like the team to run out to – while others tell us they’d prefer no music at all and just to have the noise of the crowd building up the atmosphere. It’s something we’re always happy to listen to the fans on. “Local Hero has still been used this season and it was never more appropriate to use then when we invited supporter Mark Allison to run a lap around the pitch at the Aston Villa game after his charity exploits in running from John O’Groats to Land’s End. “Many fans tell us that they’d also like The Blaydon Races to be played before kick-off.”
  18. I'm about to do the same. Just wanted to know if it isn't some boring list of facts and numbers.
  19. The Newcastle United Miscellany Who can tell me if this book is worth buying?? Anyone who can recommend me a book about the toon?
  20. Formation Yes Score No 2-1 How the hell can you predict the scoreline and not the team? Surely if you don't know the team, you have no chance of knowing the score. You're just plucking numbers out of the air I'm just positive. But I'm the only one here
