From Skysports clockwatch: 11.30 Gianluca Vialli has been the subject of a surprise gamble today to succeed Alan Shearer as Newcastle manager. Sky Bet received a flurry of requests for odds on the Italian taking over at St James' Park and he is now 4/1 second favourite behind Shearer (2/7) to lead the Magpies into the Championship next month. Sky Bet's Helen Jacob said: "This morning, out of the blue, we had a dozen requests for Vialli for Newcastle manager. We didn't even have him in the betting so quoted 12/1, which was snapped up and he is now down to 4/1 second favourite behind Alan Shearer. We'll be keeping a close eye on this market today. "Rumours abound that Vialli may be installed as Director of Football alongside Shearer as manager but punters have been quick to back Vialli for the main job. He's been out of the game for seven years so it would seem to be an odd appointment but you never know the way things are with Newcastle at the moment." ;D

Yeah, to a Hong Kong based consortium! Apparently they will install Vialli as DoF and Shearer as manager.

Strange because he's with the team in Ireland...

"A deal is nearly done, it's very close," said a source. "It could be announced as early as Tuesday or Wednesday next week." Ashley believes he can get a better deal if Newcastle have a manager in place for the massive rebuilding job needed to help the club secure immediate promotion.

Alan Shearer has met Freddy Shepherd to discuss what will happen should the former Newcastle United chairman succeed in buying the club back from Mike Ashley. Shepherd has been desperate to regain control at St James' Park ever since he was ousted by Ashley when the sports retailer secretly purchased Sir John Hall's majority shareholding two years ago. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jun/10/newcastle-united-alan-shearer-freddy-shepherd

The investment group linked to a multi-million pound takeover of English club Newcastle United has refused to comment on reports of the bid which would turn the Championship (second division) side into a Barcelona-style trust. "We are aware of the reports but we have no comment at the moment," John Gaunt, Chief Executive Officer, Profitable Group, told Reuters when contacted at his Singapore headquarters on Wednesday. http://uk.reuters.com/article/footballNews/idUKSP42638020090610?rpc=401&
